Explore Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda in Cambodia

Phnom Penh may not boast as many attractions as other Southeast Asian capital cities like Bangkok or Vientiane; however, it does have the magnificent Phnom Penh Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, which are must-visit destinations. This travel guide will provide essential information on how to reach these historical sites as well as what to expect during your visit.

The Royal Palace Phnom Penh

The Throne Hall stands as the central structure of the Royal Palace. Constructed in 1863, the hall continues to host religious and royal ceremonies. Although entry into the hall is restricted, visitors can glimpse its grandeur through the windows, where photography appears to be unmonitored.

Moreover, the exterior presents captivating architectural features, specifically the stunning rooftops. Early morning is undoubtedly the best time for photography, offering excellent lighting for capturing the beauty of this landmark.

The Silver Pagoda

The Silver Pagoda, also known as Wat Preah Keo, is one of the main attractions within the Royal Palace grounds. Initially constructed in 1892, it underwent extensive reconstruction in 1962, embellished with a vast array of gold, silver, and diamonds.

The name derives from its remarkable silver floor, which comprises nearly 5,000 silver tiles weighing over 5 tons. While interior photography is prohibited, the exterior offers ample opportunities for breathtaking photos at any time of the day, particularly in the morning.

Other Palace Buildings

The palace grounds feature several smaller structures that, while off-limits for interior exploration, remain worth your attention. Notably, a gated grey stupa houses the remains of King Norodom Sihanouk, and a white stupa is dedicated to King Ang Duong.

Visitors are encouraged to wander and appreciate the diverse architecture before proceeding further.

How To Get To The Royal Palace

Conveniently situated in the heart of Phnom Penh near the riverside, the Royal Palace is easily accessible. Travel options include tuk-tuks, car taxis, or a pleasant walking distance from several nearby hotels.

I stayed at a guesthouse by the riverside that was just a 5-minute walk to the Royal Palace. It offers a hassle-free visit without the need for transportation.

Is The Royal Palace Open / Closed?

The Royal Palace is currently open for visitors as of 2024. After a two-year closure starting in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and renovation efforts, the palace has welcomed guests back to marvel at its beauty once again!
