Exploring Phu Quoc: Your Ultimate Travel Guide
iBestTravel destination editor, James Pham, shares insights and tips for visiting Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s beautiful island off the southern coast.
To escape the scorching heat of Saigon, I hopped on a one-hour flight to Phu Quoc. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, this stunning island has evolved into a premier beach destination over the past decade. With a remarkable 150 km of coastline, a visa waiver for all nationalities, and countless attractions, Phu Quoc is the perfect getaway.
Accommodation and Vibe
While most hotels are located around the bustling town of Duong Dong, I decided to stay at the southern tip of the island, a gateway to smaller islands and the newly developed Sunset Town. Interestingly inspired by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, I found a surprisingly authentic vibe amidst its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored homes, terracotta roofs, and blooming bougainvillea.
I enjoyed my stay at La Festa Phu Quoc, Southeast Asia’s first Curio Collection property by Hilton. The surreal design, featuring a soaring clock tower, arched ceilings, and a dazzling infinity pool overlooking the ocean, truly transported me to another world. Nearby, I discovered exciting entertainment options, including the cable car to Hon Thom Island and the harbor where boats embark on island-hopping adventures.
Activities to Enjoy
One standout experience was the scenic cable car ride to Hon Thom (Pineapple Island), recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest non-stop three-rope cable car. This approximately 8 km journey offers breathtaking views of fishing boats, lush islands, and the vibrant blue sea.
Upon arriving, I explored Sun World Hon Thom, an amusement park boasting numerous water slides, a thrilling roller coaster, and breathtaking vistas. Moreover, I participated in sea walking, observing serene coral reefs and vibrant schools of fish in this UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve—all at a very reasonable price for a family-friendly day.
Nights Full of Entertainment
To my surprise, Sunset Town features an exciting range of evening entertainment. I experienced thrilling Jet Ski and flyboard shows and captivating free water puppet performances right by the beach. The highlight was the “Kiss of the Sea” show—a mesmerizing blend of acrobatics, pyrotechnics, and immersive visuals, culminating in a stunning fireworks display. Post-show, we enjoyed the lively night market brimming with delectable street food and vibrant art performances.
Dining Delights
Phu Quoc offers fresh seafood and high-quality fish sauce and peppercorns. However, my most unforgettable culinary experience was at Pink Pearl, where French fine dining meets tropical charm. I savored exquisite dishes like Japanese wagyu and French scallops in an opulent pink-themed setting, complete with entertainment from a pianist and violinist. It was a delightful dining experience that surpassed my expectations.
Travel Tips for Your Visit
If you’re planning your first trip to Phu Quoc, consider splitting your time between the vibrant town of Duong Dong with its lively night market and the postcard-perfect beaches in the south, like Kem Beach and Sao Beach. This approach allows you to absorb the local island lifestyle while relishing a relaxing beach getaway. For budget-conscious travelers, explore mini hoteliers in Sunset Town, or look for packages that combine accommodation with attractions like the Kiss of the Sea show and trips to Hon Thom Island.
