Discover iBestTravel’s Contemporary Art Trail in Piedmont, Italy
‘Our vision is to bring culture through art, theatre, dance, and music,’ says philanthropist Silvano Stella on the creation of a contemporary art trail in Italy’s UNESCO-listed Langhe-Roero Monferrato region. He’s collaborating with power collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, a member of the international councils of MoMA and Tate.
‘The idea is not to make people buy tickets, but to let visitors interact with these works at any time of day,’ Stella adds. To this end, he is developing an app with information accessed via QR code and programming a series of concerts, plays, and events at natural amphitheaters carved into the hillsides, one of which will host a mural by music photographer Guido Harari. It’s a project that’s only now growing from roots put down quietly over the years: in 2015, Stella commissioned English artist David Tremlett to paint the Chiesetta di Coazzolo with bold geometric motifs.
Among the most monumental works in the region, it joined his riotously colorful Chapel of Barolo, created in collaboration with the late conceptual pioneer Sol LeWitt in 1999. Tremlett has since produced two more installations in the area, including one in the Relais San Maurizio, an art-focused hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant in a former monastery. Moreover, a gallery residency launched by Eva Menzio – former director of Monaco’s Marlborough Gallery – along with her son Francesco Pistoi and his partner Claudia Zunino, draws a clued-in crowd to Mombarcaro’s woods.
This June, they will host Lunetta 11’s third annual exhibition, showcasing the work of emerging names such as New York-based Brian Belott. ‘There are so many interesting people passing through,’ says Zunino, explaining how the rural area has a surprisingly international scene. From Switzerland’s Alp-lined Engadin Valley and light-pierced Arles in the South of France to the Portuguese coastal hub of Melides, there’s something even more curious about art found in unexpected places; now Piedmont is the latest cross on that cultural map.
