Explore Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure: What to Expect and Insider Tips

Summer at Disneyland and California Adventure is typically a Dole Whip-filled, Splash Mountain-riding affair. However, starting this weekend, it’s all about Pixar Pier.

The soon-to-open land, themed around various characters from Pixar’s extensive library of films, will introduce new shops, restaurants, entertainment, play areas, and meet-and-greets to Disney California Adventure’s waterfront. Additionally, it will feature two re-conceived attractions. Notably, Toy Story Mania, the joyously competitive shootout game, will remain untouched.

As the park’s first Pixar Animation Studios-led expansion since Cars Land debuted six years ago, this area pays homage to its predecessor, Paradise Pier, blending a turn-of-the-century coastal Californian style with classic seaside decor and a cast of animated characters that fans have come to love.

Two Fan-Favorite Attractions Will Soon Be Transformed

Incredicoaster, the most anticipated opening this year, will unveil a storyline thrilling enough to match its drops and inversions, centered around Jack-Jack Parr’s newfound superpowers as seen in Incredibles 2. Moreover, Pixar Pal-A-Round, reminiscent of Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel, will showcase a vibrant new look adorned with beloved character pairings in its gondolas.

The roller coaster, formerly known as California Screamin’, and the ferris wheel, which has gone by names like Sun Wheel and Mickey’s Fun Wheel, have been crowd favorites since their debut in 2001. The reimagining of Pixar Pier aims to breathe new life into these beloved rides.

Pixar Pier is More Than Just a New Land

Disney California Adventure has transformed the former Paradise Pier into four uniquely themed areas. One area will showcase mid-century touches celebrating The Incredibles, while another will feature “Toy Story” attractions, shops, and dining options. Additionally, a third “neighborhood” will encompass all things Pixar, and the fourth will introduce the characters from “Inside Out” for the first time in the theme park.

Nearly Every Movie You Can Think Of Will Be Represented

From vibrant carnival games to Pixar Pal-A-Round buckets swinging in the air, you can expect to encounter familiar faces throughout the land. The Pixarmonic Orchestra, a lively ensemble whose quirky renditions of film scores have delighted early summer visitors, will perform from a themed bandshell. Billboards resembling vintage seaside advertisements, with nods to Coco and WALL-E, will serve as decorative elements throughout.

7 Secrets About Disney Rides Directly from Imagineers

A designated Pixar Promenade area will serve as an all-encompassing mini-land, where characters from future Pixar films are expected to take residence. Keep an eye out for Easter eggs and not-so-hidden references to Pixar productions, from “Monsters, Inc.”-themed cocktails to clever names of shops.

There’s Even More on the Way

Not all experiences will be available when Pixar Pier debuts on June 23. Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff, selling rainbow cotton candy, character-shaped cake pops, and sweet candy tears inspired by “Inside Out,” is set to open later this summer. Two new rides are also on their way for 2019: Jessie’s Critter Carousel, where guests will ride the adorable woodland creatures from “Toy Story 2,” and an “Inside Out” spinning ride, details of which are still under wraps.

If You’re in Search of Instagrammable Food, Come Hungry

Adorable Snowman’s creamy lemon soft-serve and Pixar-themed parfaits, which pair the frozen treat with a refreshing blue raspberry slush, have gained popularity. Additionally, Pixar Pier’s six upcoming dining locations will serve an array of delicious offerings, including hot dogs, fried chicken, churros, and cookies, all themed around animated features and short films from the studio.

Expert Opinion: Make Your Dinner Arrangements

Lamplight Lounge is poised to be an instant favorite. This new table-service restaurant, replacing Ariel’s Grotto, marks Disneyland Resort’s first gastropub. It features hearty dishes such as manchego cheese-topped potato skins and pancetta-topped salmon sandwiches, complemented by craft cocktails and California-brewed beers. Notably, an exclusive pour from local brewery Bottle Logic will be available. Be sure to try the must-have donuts with dipping sauces. Whether you heed this advice or not, guests will still have the option to indulge in delights, as Cove Bar, previously favored for cocktails and lobster nachos, is now integrated into Lamplight Lounge, allowing for sharing plates and menu selections at leisure.
