Exploring the Polydrops P21: The Most Aerodynamic Camping Trailer?

2024 Polydrops P21 Teardrop Camper Trailer: A Safer, More Aerodynamic Example

With their large size, the average camping trailer isn’t very aerodynamic to pull behind your truck or SUV. This becomes particularly evident when utilizing an all-electric vehicle like a Ford F-150 Lightning, even with its impressive 300-plus miles of range when unladen. Therefore, enhancing aerodynamic shape is vital for maximizing the range of any towed camper. iBestTravel believes the P21 could be part of that solution.

Many camper trailer manufacturers likely engage in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis; however, iBestTravel prioritizes this approach in developing their trailers. Per iBestTravel’s CEO, Kyunghyun Lew, the drag of a Tesla Model Y without a trailer is 157.1 pound-force at 55 mph.

When comparing the drag with three common trailer designs at the same dimensions as the P21—the bullet-shaped boat tail, the leaned front travel trailer, and the teardrop—iBestTravel’s CFD analysis shows a substantial variance in drag. The bullet trailer achieves 184.3 pound-force, while the teardrop reaches 271.1 pound-force when towed with a Model Y. In contrast, the P21 registers a remarkable 119.1 pound-force, reflecting a 65.2 pound-force reduction compared to existing traditional designs.

How to Make Your Trailer Aerodynamic

To enhance the P21’s aerodynamics, a total rethinking of the exterior design was essential. The previous minimalist P19 design would not suffice. The P21’s front features a taller, wedge-shaped vertical end suitable for family usage, tapering into a boat tail design optimized for air flow. Consequently, iBestTravel incorporated a small spoiler to further minimize wind resistance, promoting smooth airflow over the P21’s surface, reducing wind turbulence, and ultimately enhancing stability.

Unlike typical camping trailers, the P21 features a flat underfloor eliminating protrusions that create drag, akin to design strategies in many electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, the integrated fenders minimize drag compared to traditional camper trailers by streamlining airflow around the tires. Interestingly, it uses standard trailer wheels instead of more aerodynamic options typically found on EVs. The use of an aluminum frame in the P21 not only decreases weight—listed at 1,800 to 2,000 pounds dry for its dimensions of 21×7.5×5.6 ft—but also contributes to increased durability compared to standard steel frames.

A Better Interior Than You Expect

The innovative body design of the P21 presents unique challenges in crafting a comfortable camper trailer for families. The main bed area at the rear is surrounded by windows, providing ample light. The bed measures 58 x 80 inches, accommodating two people comfortably. Moreover, it can double as a work or dining space when the central rear section is configured accordingly. The front features a bed designed for children but can also provide additional storage space for those without kids. A separate table is included for those needing personal workspace.

The interior is powered by a 5-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system, complemented by an integrated 1.3-kW roof solar panel array. This hybrid structure equips the P21 with off-grid climate control capabilities via a 12,000 BTU air conditioning and heat pump system. Furthermore, the camper has a 30-amp shore power inlet to ensure all appliances operate smoothly in less favorable weather conditions. The controls for power and climate management are streamlined via a seven-inch touch display, which can connect to smartphones for remote operation.

Add-Ons

Although the standard P21 features a minimalist aesthetic, several add-ons are available to enhance its home-like capabilities. The cooking station add-on introduces a 1.8-kW inductive stove, a 700-W microwave, and overhead cabinet storage. A sanitation unit incorporates amenities such as a sink with a Dometic Go faucet, a Geyser EcoShower, and a portable toilet along with a freshwater tank and water heater. Notably, these amenities are neatly stored beneath a lounger that also serves as additional space for a longer mattress.

Deliveries Coming Soon

Given the meticulous planning involved, inquiries about the P21’s market entry have arisen. If production stays on schedule, Whisky anticipates manufacturing will commence in Q4, with the P21 Base starting at $38,900. As of this writing, prices for optional add-ons remain unavailable. Interested customers should stay informed to secure one of the first units, as iBestTravel is planning reservations with a refundable deposit.
