On the Trail of Pope Francis in Argentina Updated 5:01 AM EDT, Fri July 17, 2015 Basilica de San José — Walking tours of Pope Francis' old stomping grounds are offered in Flores, Argentina. The first stop on the tour is the Basilica de San José. In September of 1953, the young Pope felt the need for a confession as he passed by the church. It was after this confession that he decided to become a priest. This confessional, where Francis came as a teenager, is where he supposedly began his journey to the Vatican. Tourists have been coming in droves to visit Pope Francis's hometown since he was elected to the papacy in 2013. The address was discovered by a historian who dug out Francis's birth certificate and sent a copy to the Vatican. The Pope moved to a larger house at Calle Membrillar when his family expanded. Pope Francis attended a mixed primary school called Escuela Pedro Antonio Cerviño.
