Porsche Taycan EV Launches Affordable Rear-Drive Model in China

Porsche Taycan: A Look at the Entry-Level Luxury Electric Vehicle

The electric vehicle segment is extremely competitive in China. Local offerings are strong from manufacturers such as BYD, NIO, and Xpeng, and this is before considering international EV automakers like Tesla, which produces some of its vehicles in China as well. With such a solid market for electric vehicles, it’s no surprise that Porsche is debuting its entry-level Taycan in China.

Specifications and Features of the Taycan

Despite being the most affordable model in the Taycan lineup, the rear-drive version is still a well-equipped luxury sedan that comes standard with stylish 19-inch wheels. Similar to the Taycan 4S, the base model features a 79-kWh battery pack, with an optional upgrade to a 93-kWh pack available for those seeking extended range.

Performance

  • With the smaller 79-kWh battery, the Taycan produces up to 402 horsepower.
  • Estimated range on a full charge is 257 miles, based on the NEDC cycle.

Battery Options and Range

Choosing the larger battery pack increases power output to 469 horsepower, while also extending the driving range to approximately 303 miles, according to NEDC estimates. Notably, the standard Taycan can achieve 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 143 mph. Additionally, the absence of a front motor allows the rear-drive model to offer a slightly larger front trunk.

Market Anticipation and Pricing

While the exact timing of the standard Taycan’s release remains uncertain, it is expected to make its way to markets like the U.S. with a starting price around $80,000. This pricing strategy is likely aimed at attracting Tesla Model S customers, even though the Taycan’s driving range may not fully compete with its American counterpart.

Expected Range Performance

The Taycan with the larger battery pack is anticipated to achieve excellent range, potentially exceeding 220 miles on the EPA cycle. Enthusiasts hope that Porsche will introduce the base Taycan to the U.S. market, allowing for real-world testing of these range predictions and showcasing the vehicle’s performance capabilities.
