Portugal has unveiled an exciting new rail pass, enabling both tourists and locals to explore its breathtaking coast for under €50. This initiative represents a fantastic opportunity to experience the beauty of Portugal’s landscapes.

Earlier this month, it was announced that passengers can purchase an unlimited monthly train pass for just €49 (approximately $53). This pass positions Portugal among other European countries like France, Spain, and Germany, which already feature popular and affordable monthly rail options.

The National Rail Pass by Comboios de Portugal is broadly valid across nearly all regional train networks. However, it is essential to note that the pass cannot be used for urban services, including subways and the famous trams in Porto, Lisbon, and Coimbra. Fortunately, for the eligible trains, there are no limits on rides or blackout times.

To acquire the new pass, travelers need to obtain a CP Client card, which is conveniently available at various offices across the country with just a valid identification. It is important to note that there is a cost of an additional €6 for the card. After obtaining the card, it can be used to load the new monthly pass, which is effective from the first day of the month to the last day.

The process is straightforward. Travelers can simply board one of the regional trains, providing a route from Lisbon to Porto. In Porto, visitors have the opportunity to ascend the iconic Clérigos Tower for a panoramic view of the city and savor the local delicacy, francesinha sandwiches at Cafe Santiago.

Alternatively, travelers can proceed from the capital to Elvas, the easternmost municipality in Portugal and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, they can discover ancient forts and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, featuring impressive works by Portuguese artists.

For those seeking adventure, the pass allows travel south from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António. This scenic route hugs the stunning coastline, providing ample opportunities to explore beach communities, surf, swim, or indulge in the delectable seafood that Portugal is renowned for. Indeed, the €49 investment is exceptionally worthwhile. For more details about the pass, visit the Comboios de Portugal website at cp.pt.
