Types of Masks Prohibited on American Airlines

American Airlines Face Mask Policy: What Travelers Need to Know

Travelers flying with American Airlines should be aware that certain types of face masks are not permitted on board its flights. This decision aligns with the latest guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pertaining to the use of face masks to mitigate the spread of the virus.

As of 19 August, passengers are prohibited from boarding while wearing face coverings with exhaust valves, as well as those made from materials like mesh or lace that fail to adequately cover the nose and mouth. Additionally, face shields are also banned unless used in conjunction with a face covering. American Airlines’ face mask regulations are applicable to all passengers aged two and above, although masks may be temporarily removed for eating and drinking.

The airline has established a requirement for passengers to wear a well-secured cloth or mask that fits snugly against the face. This mask must cover the individual’s nose and mouth and be constructed of a material designed to block respiratory droplets. According to the CDC, face coverings featuring one-way valves or vents allow exhaled air to escape through holes, making it easier for respiratory droplets to reach others and potentially spread the coronavirus (COVID-19).

For those who do not possess an approved face covering, one will be provided at the airport upon request. However, passengers who do not comply with American’s face covering policy at any time may be denied boarding or prohibited from future travel. “Wearing a face covering is a responsibility we all share,” says Alison Taylor, chief customer officer at American. “An effective covering, worn properly, is one of the best ways we can control the spread of COVID-19 to protect our team members and customers.”
