Puerto Rico Eases COVID-19 Restrictions: Key Changes Effective March 10

Puerto Rico Lifts COVID-19 Restrictions

Puerto Rico is removing most COVID-19 restrictions starting Thursday, March 10. Consequently, entry requirements for domestic travelers will be lifted, and individuals will no longer need to show proof of vaccination to enter venues or accommodations.

After navigating a spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, Puerto Rico is ditching almost all pandemic restrictions. This move comes as the island continues to excel in vaccination rates compared to most U.S. states and territories.

According to recent data, at least 77% of Puerto Rico’s population was fully vaccinated as of Monday, significantly higher than the U.S. average of 65%.

“While it is true that the pandemic is not over, the immunity we have achieved with vaccination puts us in a better position than any other territory,” remarked Puerto Rico’s health secretary, Carlos Mellado López, in a recent statement.

Updated Entry Protocols for Domestic Travelers

Beginning March 10, passengers arriving on domestic flights will no longer need to present their vaccination status or a negative test result. They are also exempt from completing any travel declaration forms before traveling.

Removal of Health Pass Requirements

Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will no longer be required for entry into restaurants, bars, movie theaters, museums, and hotels. Nevertheless, individual establishments may choose to implement their own health and safety guidelines. Thus, if vaccinated, keeping your health pass handy during your trip could be beneficial.

Mask Mandates Eliminated

All mask requirements will be removed for both indoor and outdoor establishments. However, public officials have advised that individuals still wear masks in indoor areas where vaccination status is unclear. Masks will remain mandatory in healthcare facilities, long-term care homes, on airplanes, and in airports.

Capacity Limits Lifted for Businesses

Capacity limits for both private and public establishments, including restaurants, bars, theaters, and event venues, will be abolished.

International Travelers: Required Protocols

For international travelers, non-U.S. citizens are still required to show proof of vaccination and a negative test result taken within one day of travel. This regulation remains unchanged.

Moreover, non-U.S. travelers who are unvaccinated are not permitted entry into the U.S. as per federal law.
