Summary of Content
Pass through the small hamlet of Quartzsite, Arizona, in the summer, and you may think nothing happens in this flat desert town. However, come winter, the entire area bustles with activity—and not just from tumbleweeds.
During the winter months, RV enthusiasts flock to camp (often referred to as “boondocking”) in the temperate, albeit primitive, desert conditions. Moreover, there is another major appeal that attracts people during the winter months: a passion for geology.
Geology
Quartzsite, with its unique concentration of collectible gems, minerals, and precious metals, has stood out as a rock hound’s paradise since the 1960s. Consequently, the population swells each winter, drawing in more than 1 million visitors, most of whom converge on the small town in a wave of RVs throughout January and February. The Desert USA website elaborates on the allure:
“Eight major gem and mineral shows as well as vendors of raw and handcrafted merchandise peddle their wares to snowbirds, collectors, and enthusiasts.”
Location
Situated in the Sonoran Desert of western Arizona, Quartzsite is located just 18 miles east of the Colorado River along Interstate 10. This 125-mile journey from Phoenix typically takes about two hours; furthermore, the town is easily accessible from Los Angeles in under five hours by car.
Shopping
The annual show season stretches from October through April, with the primary events occurring in January and February. If you have an interest in gems and minerals, make sure to attend the significant “rock hound” events, where you can discover collectible geodes, crystals, and even fossilized bones from around the world. Antique enthusiasts also enjoy the swap meets, while unusual handmade items and unique jewelry can be found at the nearly constant craft shows. Additionally, the mix also includes classic car shows and chili cook-offs, ensuring Crazy Quartzsite keeps your social calendar full.
Check the Quartzsite calendar to plan your visit around the events that interest you the most. Furthermore, pick up a copy of The Desert Star newspaper upon arrival for the latest news and advertisements.
Nightlife
How does a town in the Sonoran Desert, hundreds of miles from the nearest body of water, gain the largest yacht-club membership worldwide? Back in the 1970s, Al Madden opened the Quartzsite Yacht Club Restaurant Bar & Grill, where he began selling memberships as a humorous notion. By 2010, more than 10,000 individuals from every state and numerous countries worldwide had obtained membership cards from the Quartzsite Yacht Club.
What to Expect
Be prepared for traffic during the peak season; I-10 frequently experiences congestion during January and February.
It’s notably dusty out in the desert, and most shopping occurs outdoors in temporary tents lined up along rows of RVs. The wind can rise or a sudden rainstorm can occur, so come equipped with a jacket, sturdy outdoor clothing, and reliable walking shoes.
If you’re not inclined to stay in an RV, a small number of chain hotels operate in Quartzsite. Alternatively, you can choose to stay on the west side of Phoenix and make a day trip to Quartzsite.
