The Vibrant Transformation of Faro de Ajo in Spain
A lighthouse in has received a colorful makeover by a well-known local artist, and the vibrant transformation is attracting great attention. The 16-meter formerly white lighthouse, Faro de Ajo, was painted with over 70 colors by artist, Okuda San Miguel, to highlight the cultural diversity of the area.
The project, called “Infinite Cantabria,” commenced on 24 August. It was commissioned by the Port Authority of Santander and Bareyo Town Council and stands as the first lighthouse along the Spanish coast to undergo such an artistic intervention. Faro de Ajo, dating back to 1930, is notable for being the last lighthouse built in Cantabria.
The artistic transformation not only enhances the lighthouse’s aesthetics but also respects its original purpose of assisting maritime navigation. Furthermore, the theme chosen by Okuda San Miguel symbolizes the natural wealth of the region, representing local fauna and celebrating the cultural diversity of modern, open Cantabria and its global connections.
“It has been a unique experience, both because of the artistic challenge and the opportunity to carry out this project in my homeland,” remarks Okuda.
