The Montserrat Remote Workers Stamp: A Unique Opportunity for Digital Nomads
A Caribbean island has declared itself open to welcome digital nomads and work-from-home professionals to call it “home” for up to 12 months. Montserrat has joined the global destinations courting professionals who can work away from their home country.
The concept of the year-long Montserrat Remote Workers Stamp is to provide professionals and entrepreneurs the opportunity to experience a work-life-vacation balance. Consequently, individuals can exchange routines of at-home environments for exotic black-sand beaches and rich cultural offerings. Given the current travel environment, which is fluctuating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this initiative offers a chance to shift pace and contribute to the sustainability of the tourism industry as the island’s newest residents.
Application fees for the program are $500 (€415) for individuals and $750 (€623) for individuals accompanied by a maximum of three family members. Importantly, candidates must provide proof of full-time employment, demonstrate an annual income of a minimum of $70,000 (€58,140), and maintain up-to-date health insurance coverage for themselves and any accompanying family members. Nestled in the Eastern Caribbean, Montserrat has a total area of just 39.5 square miles and offers a vast network of hiking trails amidst its green mountainous terrain, along with dark-sand beaches. Moreover, it features an active volcano, the spectacular Soufriere Hills Volcano.
According to Montserrat’s deputy premier, Dr. Hon. Samuel Joseph, “The global pandemic has changed how we live and work, and as multinationals and leading startups accelerate their rates of digital adoption, the need to be physically present to fulfill professional responsibilities has been redefined. We understand that there are individuals worldwide who now have the ability to work remotely and are actively seeking a change of environment. The remote worker program is designed to invite and encourage them to work in Montserrat, allowing them to become more than just visitors but integral members of the community in one of the world’s most unique destinations.”
