Jaguar XJ: Development Updates Amid Pandemic Challenges
If you haven’t heard by now, the next Jaguar XJ will embrace battery-electric technology. However, due to the global pandemic that’s stricken the automotive industry, the British brand is reportedly slowing down the development of its upcoming flagship sedan.
Delayed Production Timeline
We expected to see the new XJ as soon as early 2021, but this timeline may no longer be feasible. According to reports, the reveal of the new electric Jaguar might be pushed to late 2021. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is reportedly cutting back on nonessential spending due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.
Focus on Profitable Models
This situation necessitates that JLR focus on producing and delivering models that are currently lucrative, which impacts the development of the EV XJ. When asked for a comment, a JLR spokesperson stated that while engineers continue to work on the next generation all-electric Jaguar XJ, the unprecedented circumstances will inevitably have a significant influence on their immediate plans.
Impact on Manufacturing Facilities
This is particularly relevant considering that the factory responsible for assembling Jaguar’s sedans, which includes the XF and XE, has yet to reopen. Production is expected to resume soon, with precautions in place to ensure the safety of workers.
Platform and Powertrain Configuration
Jaguar plans to develop the new XJ on the company’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture. This rear-drive platform is capable of accommodating various powertrain configurations, including battery-electric and internal combustion engine technologies. Therefore, the next XJ may also feature a gas engine option, reflecting Jaguar’s intent to stay ahead of the EV trend with its flagship model.
