Report: VW Group Considering Selling Bugatti to Rimac

The Future of Bugatti: Speculations on a Potential Sale to Rimac

Reports from various European sources indicate a potential sale of Bugatti to the Croatian automaker Rimac. While details are not yet confirmed, these rumors mark a significant shift towards electric vehicles in the automotive landscape.

The Rumor Mill: Bugatti and Rimac

As reported by various sources, including Reuters, Rimac, founded by Mate Rimac, is interested in acquiring Bugatti from the Volkswagen Group. Over the years, Volkswagen has absorbed multiple brands under its umbrella, including Lamborghini and Ducati. Although Bugatti is considered a prized asset, its strategic importance to the Volkswagen Group may be changing.

The Rise of Rimac: An Electric Pioneer

Rimac is well-known for its electric hypercars, such as the Concept One. Moreover, it increasingly focuses on providing electric vehicle (EV) expertise to third-party automakers, including renowned brands like Koenigsegg, Aston Martin, and Porsche. The latter, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is particularly relevant given its commitment to electric performance demonstrated by the impressive Taycan electric sports car.

A Collaborative Future?

Porsche and Rimac envision a robust development partnership, wherein Rimac will supply components and technical knowledge to Porsche and potentially to other manufacturers within the automotive industry.

Speculations on Ownership Transition

Given their existing rapport, journalists from CAR magazine speculate that Volkswagen might sell Bugatti to Rimac while Porsche could increase its stake in the Croatian firm. This scenario appears plausible, as it may allow VW to strategically divest from Bugatti while simultaneously enhancing its capabilities in the EV sector.
