Campground Review and Description
Description: Natural Chimneys is a delightful campground surrounded by abundant trees and spacious sites. Larry camped in a travel trailer and utilized one of the four full hook-up spaces available. The enthusiastic campground host adds to the welcoming atmosphere. During the Halloween season, the campground is especially popular, often selling out for two weekends as campers decorate their sites for trick-or-treat activities. Note that no alcohol is permitted. Facilities include clean restrooms with hot showers, grassy spaces, gravel roads, children’s playground, a summer swimming pool, and a nearby trout-fishing stream. The county operates this well-maintained campground, ensuring easy access for all visitors.
Pros, Cons, Attractions, and Additional Comments
Pros: A warm, friendly camping experience with ample room for relaxation and activities.
Cons: It’s advisable to arrive during daylight hours, as finding a campsite in the dark can be a challenge due to insufficient markings. Only four sites offer sewer hookups.
Attractions: The North River is stocked annually with trout. Additionally, visitors can enjoy jousting tournaments held twice each summer. The scenic highway provides breathtaking views, especially during the fall foliage season.
Additional Comments: This campground does not operate as a full-service resort, and there is no on-site restaurant. However, a small grocery store is conveniently located about 2 miles away for essentials.

Natural Chimneys Camping and Travel Information
Situated in Mount Solon, Virginia, within the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the Natural Chimneys are limestone rock formations that began forming over 500 million years ago, when this area was part of an ancient inland sea during the Paleozoic era. The erosive forces of water shaped these stunning natural towers, which rise as high as 120 feet above the valley floor, providing an exceptional visual experience for visitors.
Natural Chimneys Regional Park and Campground invites both day and overnight guests. It offers 145 campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, as well as a separate section for primitive tent camping featuring spacious walk-in campsites. Camping is available during the season on a ‘first come, first serve basis’ with opportunities for advance reservations or walk-ins/drive-ins.
Beyond the pristine outdoor experience, the park features a Junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, a toddler swimming pool, picnic shelters available for rent, and a performance stage suitable for special events.
