Initially launched in October 1883, the Orient Express set forth from Paris to Istanbul, quickly becoming synonymous with luxury travel. After years of dormancy, the famed carriages were revived by the Accor hotel group’s Orient Express brand in 2018 and are now gearing up to transport passengers stylishly across Europe, beginning in Paris.
While specific routes have yet to be finalized, it is anticipated that the updated service will retrace its historic route between Paris and Istanbul. Here’s everything known so far about the much-anticipated return of this iconic train, including a look at its lavish interiors.
The Origins of an Icon
Created by Belgian engineer Georges Nagelmackers, the Orient Express was envisioned after his unsatisfactory experience with American sleeper cars. Upon returning to Europe, he set forth to design a luxurious rail service centered on comfort and sophistication.
The inaugural journey carried 40 passengers from Paris to Constantinople, spanning 13 days. The service operated until 1977 when the rise of budget air travel diminished the allure of grand train journeys.
After a dormant period, the train was revived in the 1980s yet faced further discontinuation in 2009.
The Mystery of the Missing Trains
In 2015, researcher Arthur Mettetal unearthed the forgotten carriages of the Orient Express while reviewing a YouTube video. He discerned markings that led him to discover the train’s location in Belarus.
Following two years of negotiations, the original carriages were successfully acquired by Accor’s Orient Express group in 2018.
Traveling in Style
Currently, the historic carriages are undergoing renovation by architect Maxime d’Angeac and a dedicated team of artisans. D’Angeac has a distinguished background in creating luxury interiors and aims to blend the romance of the original design with modern comforts.
The aesthetic preservation includes stunning Lalique glass panels alongside art deco marquetry. D’Angeac’s approach keeps the train’s spirit alive while catering to contemporary tastes.
He states, “This is the reinterpretation of a legendary train, conceived as a new embassy of French luxury, sublimated by the know-how and talents of the best French craftsmen.”
What to Expect Onboard
The revamped Orient Express will feature 14 sleeping carriages, a restaurant, and a unique experiential salon for performances and events. The suites will include a grand presidential suite occupying an entire carriage, complete with private bathrooms.
Though culinary partnerships are still being finalized, the restaurant will draw inspiration from classic Orient Express menus, fostering a rich dining experience.
A Glamorous Italian Sister
Moreover, a new luxury service called the Orient Express La Dolce Vita will launch in 2023 in Italy, connecting 14 national destinations and international routes to Paris, Istanbul, and Split. Each train will showcase mid-century design reminiscent of Italy’s golden age.

The Next Chapter
Looking ahead, Accor is set to expand the Orient Express brand into hospitality with dedicated hotels opening across notable cities, including Rome and Venice, starting in 2024. This development aims to bring the signature luxury of the Orient Express experience into the realm of accommodation.
