Richard Branson Discusses Virgin Voyages’ Impact on the Travel Industry

Discover Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady: A New Era of Cruising

Virgin Voyages is finally setting sail on its MerMaiden Voyage next month, and we had the opportunity to take a look inside the cruise line’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, and speak to Richard Branson and Tom McAlpin, president and CEO, about what sets this company apart.

Richard Branson’s cruise line, Virgin Voyages, is breathing fresh air into the travel industry, offering a unique experience that aims to attract even the biggest cruise skeptics. This innovative cruise line is redefining cruising with an upscale atmosphere that combines intimate moments and sophisticated design—much like a boutique hotel—with the luxurious amenities expected from a high-end ship. Ahead of its first U.S. sailing this October, iBestTravel had the privilege of sitting down with Richard Branson and Tom McAlpin, to discuss the inspiration behind Virgin Voyages, what guests can expect, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Inspiration Behind Virgin Voyages

For Branson, the inspiration to create a cruise line came from considering the type of journey he and his family and friends would enjoy. Consequently, he gathered a team—including cruise veterans and professionals from outside the industry—and began designing the Virgin Voyages experience. Branson noted that they “started working out all the things that were wrong about the cruise industry and made sure [they] addressed those issues, making [the] ship the best sailing the seas.”

Guest Experience and Reviews

Branson emphasized, “In every single little detail, I think they’ve got it right.” Indeed, early passenger reviews have confirmed this, as even his daughter, who was initially skeptical about cruise ships, had a fantastic experience onboard with family and friends. “I’m looking forward to going on my first-ever cruise next month,” Branson added, following his recent trip to space aboard Virgin Galactic this summer.

Unique Features of Scarlet Lady

McAlpin points out that the cruising industry is typically robust: “The fundamentals of the cruise industry are strong: very high guest satisfaction, high repeat rate, great value for money.” However, they recognized the opportunity to differentiate themselves with the adults-only experience, the name Virgin Voyages, and the vessel’s luxurious aesthetic. With a superyacht-inspired exterior and stunning interiors designed by internationally recognized designers, artists, and architects, Virgin Voyages stands apart. More than 20 restaurants—including six specialty eateries—are included, rivaling remarkable establishments you’d want to visit on land, all without the typical formalities like assigned tables, dining times, or massive buffets found on other ships.

Entertainment and Amenities

Moreover, McAlpin highlights the “immersive, fun, energetic” entertainment options onboard, along with a dedicated crew, all offered in a more inclusive manner, including gratuities, basic beverages, and meals featured for guests on board.

The stunning new Virgin Voyages Beach Club in Bimini will provide additional on-land experiences. “Think of this as Ibiza meets Tulum,” McAlpin notes. This fall, cruises will depart from Miami, taking guests to various ports within the U.S., Bahamas, and Mexico. Branson also hopes to include Cuba in future itineraries, aligning with original plans prior to 2019 travel restrictions.

Target Audience and Health Protocols

So, who is the Virgin Voyages experience ideal for? “Young at heart people who want to have a good time,” says Branson, adding that the age range—from 22 to 72—is irrelevant. Moreover, they are prepared with numerous COVID-19 health protocols to ensure guest safety.

Although Virgin Voyages’ debut was initially delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, that additional time has allowed them to make thorough preparations. “We’ve taken the last 18 months to really look at how we can create the safest possible way to travel,” states McAlpin. Branson further adds that on this ship, “you know everybody’s vaccinated, you know everybody’s been tested before they got onto it.” With numerous COVID-related health measures in place, including vaccination requirements for passengers and crew, air purification technology, and advanced cleaning techniques, Virgin Voyages is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all aboard.

Virgin Voyages’ first U.S. sailing will set sail on Oct. 6, with further details available on the Virgin Voyages website.
