10 Best Italian Coastal Towns for Couples
For those who aren’t yet acquainted with Couple’s Coordinates, we lived in Florence, Italy, got engaged in Positano, and quite honestly consider Italy our second home. In this article, we will share what we believe to be the best Italian coastal towns for couples.
Here are the top picks that romantic travelers will adore:
1. Positano
Positano holds a special place in our hearts as it is where we got engaged two years ago. Anthony Bourdain once stated, “I think food, culture, people, and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.”
No coastal town in Italy epitomizes this statement better than Positano. The food beautifully reflects its culture, fueled by the breathtaking seaside and mountainous landscape. Explore more about it where to stay in Positano.
Things to do in Positano
Whether you’d like to hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) with your partner or enjoy an afternoon on a boat or beach, Positano is a romantic destination. Enjoy days filled with sun at the beach and evenings over a romantic dinner relishing some of the finest pasta and seafood globally.
2. Cinque Terre
It is impossible to think of coastal towns in Italy without mentioning the stunning villages of Cinque Terre. Each of the five towns is unique, resembling a colorful box of crayons.
Having made approximately ten trips to Cinque Terre, we highly recommend visiting during the warmer months of April to September. It’s also worth considering a trip in the offseason to enjoy a quieter experience.
Cinque Terre Tips
Since accommodation in Cinque Terre can be pricey, we often opt to take day trips from Florence. Use our day trip guide to navigate the towns of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare in one day.
The most crowded towns are Vernazza and Manarola
While Monterosso may see some crowds, you can usually find beach space. Conversely, Corniglia and Riomaggiore are less frequented, offering a quieter atmosphere.
3. Atrani
If you wish to escape the crowds while enjoying the Amalfi Coast’s beauty, Atrani is an ideal location. It is just 20 KM away from Positano but remains relatively untouched by tourists. We enjoyed an authentic coastal town experience here during our engagement trip.
Benefits of Staying in Atrani
A significant benefit of staying in Atrani is its proximity to Amalfi; a convenient tunnel leads you to the famous town without traffic hassles!
4. Mondello
Oh, Sicilia! Southern Italy features breathtaking landscapes, and Sicily is at its heart. The island boasts a distinct culture, with locals often speaking Sicilian, an Italian dialect not widely spoken elsewhere.
What to Expect in Mondello
Mondello conveys the classic Sicilian charm: crystal-clear blue waters, towering mountains, stunning white sands, and immensely enjoyable local cuisine. It’s a favored vacation spot for Italians seeking tranquility.
5. Cefalu
Since we’re on the subject of Sicily, Cefalu deserves mentioning. This coastal town embodies the spirit of Sicily.
Although the beaches may not compare to a luxury resort, the coastal charm and delightful atmosphere make Cefalu a memorable destination. The outdoor market on weekends and activities such as hiking add to its allure.
6. Cala Gonone
Cala Gonone is a beautiful town adjacent to some of Sardinia’s most stunning beaches, making it an excellent choice for couples.
About Sardinia
Sardinia is vast, and exploring it requires planning. A rental car is essential to access some of the best beaches, many of which aren’t reachable by car alone. Find car rental prices here.
Hire a Boat in Sardinia
You can hire a boat from Cala Gonone to visit stunning sandy beaches such as Cala Goloritze and Cala Luna along the east coast.
7. Capri
‘Twas on the Isle of Capri that I found her

Oh, I can still see the flowers blooming round her
Where we met on the Isle of Capri-Frank Sinatra, Isle of Capri
Capri, one of Italy’s most popular islands, located just off the coast of Naples, is easily reached by boat. This picturesque island captivates with its natural beauty, yet it can become crowded during peak tourist season.
About Capri
To maximize your visit, consider taking a ferry to Capri and renting a Vespa to explore the island’s less populated areas.
8. Naples
In Naples, you will discover two culinary delights: pizza and the beach. Although Naples might not be the first town that comes to mind regarding coastal escapes, it is undeniably the birthplace of pizza. With vibrant streets and rich history, Naples should be included in any Italian adventure.
Additionally, the beautiful beaches of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are a short drive away, offering a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and relaxation.
9. Portofino
While located a bit further north along the Italian Riviera, Portofino is undeniably charming with its colorful houses, yachts, and picturesque coastline. It’s a lovely stop when visiting the region, with opportunities for scenic walks to nearby Santa Margherita.
10. Bellagio
Who says coastlines are exclusive to the Mediterranean or Adriatic Seas? Bellagio, on the shore of Lake Como, offers breathtaking views and tranquillity, making it an idyllic getaway for couples.
This charming town is perfect for a relaxing and romantic retreat. While Bellagio can be on the pricier side, the experience is worth every penny, especially at renowned local dining spots.
