Discover Roukh Kiri: A Rustic Minimalist Hotel in Khao Yai, Thailand

Experience Roukh Kiri Khao Yai

Why Experience this Retreat?
Pack linen trousers and a straw hat to blend in at this mini-village in one of Thailand’s greenest corners.

Set the Scene

Twelve farmhouse-like villas are set between fields of swaying feather grass, gnarly mango trees, and wild gardens, each one looking out onto a seemingly endless carpet of green valleys and temple-topped hills. The whitewashed buildings wouldn’t look out of place in Portugal or Greece, and neither would the rosé-sipping, espadrille-wearing guests. However, rattan furniture, bamboo roof shingles, and salas pin the hotel firmly into place.

The Backstory

Roukh Kiri was initially intended as a weekend retreat for its Bangkok-based owners, but it quickly expanded into a space to host friends and eventually paying guests. Young-gun Thai design studio Onion was enlisted to create the villas based on the style of European farmhouses. This reflects the non-native crops grown here, such as avocado and lemon, and features a refreshing minimalist-meets-rustic design.

The Rooms

All-white interiors, complemented by playful touches of bamboo, wood, and rattan, create a calming atmosphere. Large picture windows and ample natural light draw the outside in, inviting you to open the doors to your private garden and let the mountain breeze ruffle the sheer linen curtains. Each villa comes equipped with a large outdoor soaking tub for stargazing, and most include a stone-clad swimming pool, making it an inviting option for long, leisurely afternoons.

Food and Drink

The kitchen presents a unique twist on typical Thai recipes, adding a countryside touch: imagine krapow enhanced with rosemary instead of Thai basil, and farmers’ salads crafted with produce grown on the organic farm.

The Area

Surrounded by vineyards, Khao Yai’s hills serve as a playground for Bangkok’s elite and well-informed expats. Moreover, the allure of encountering wild elephants in Khao Yai National Park to the south draws many international travelers to this enchanting and less-explored region of Thailand.

The Service

As expected at a boutique Thai hotel, the linen-clad staff are friendly and eager to please. They can provide insights about the area’s best wineries and flower farms, as well as tips on the most likely spots to encounter wild elephants.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

While the ambiance is grown-up and tranquil, families are warmly welcomed. However, the standard villas may feel a bit tight for more than one child. Therefore, those traveling with a larger family might consider the more spacious Grand Presidential option, which is expected soon.

Eco Efforts

The team is actively minimizing the use of single-use plastics and aims to maintain a focus on local sourcing for all products, from bathroom items to restaurant ingredients. Additionally, food waste is composted for use on the farm, highlighting a commitment to sustainability.

Accessibility Considerations

It is essential to note that the hotel is not fully accessible for guests with mobility impairments.
