Part of the Mail Rail, an intriguing 22-mile driverless electric railway that operates beneath the bustling streets of London, will open to the public next year. This unique attraction offers a glimpse into London’s historical postal system.

The line originally opened in 1927 and was the first railway of its kind in the world, facilitating the transportation of mail between sorting offices. Although it ceased operations in 2003, a section of it will be revived as part of the £26 million Postal Museum, set to launch in spring 2017 in Mount Pleasant, located in Clerkenwell.

The museum aims to showcase five centuries of British postal history, illustrating milestones from the era of Henry VIII to the Titanic, alongside fascinating stories such as the post office cats, which once received their own wage slips and pensions. Consequently, this museum is poised to be an enriching and memorable destination for visitors interested in the evolution of communication.
