The Rise of RV Travel Post-COVID-19
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are understandably cautious about where they stay while travelling and how they get there. This may be why RV sales and rentals are experiencing a significant increase in the US. As travel restrictions and social distancing measures impact most other forms of travel, many are turning to recreational vehicles (RVs) for their journeys.
Peer-to-peer RV rental platform RVshare reports an unprecedented surge in bookings, with a remarkable 1000% increase in RV rental reservations since early April. A recent survey among RVshare users highlights a preference for outdoor travel, destination proximity, and flexibility when booking trips over the coming months.
As people plan trips for the next few months, 93% of those surveyed express a desire to avoid crowds. Moreover, 84% prefer to travel with partners or immediate family instead of friends or extended family. With approximately 11 million households owning an RV in the US, this market is showing robust demand as travelers seek safer options to minimize the risk of contracting the virus. Consequently, with national parks reopening, RVs are becoming an appealing option for outdoor enthusiasts looking to reconnect with nature.
Additionally, a survey conducted by MMGY Global for the US Travel Association reveals that 68% of respondents feel safe traveling in a personal vehicle, compared to only 11% who feel secure flying internationally. Thus, traveling in an RV not only allows individuals to experience the great outdoors but also provides a sense of freedom and personal control during uncertain times.
Founded in 2013, RVshare now lists over 100,000 RVs available across the US. For more information, check out their website here.
