Discover Italy’s Unique Scattered Hotels: Top 5 Picks for European Stays

Discover the Rise of Albergo Diffuso: Unique Scattered Hotels in Europe

The 2022 opening of Corte Fiorita—a hotel in Bosa, Sardinia, spread across five historic homes—marked a significant evolution in hospitality. This establishment represents the world’s first albergo diffuso, aimed at preserving and revitalizing traditional Italian villages. Instead of new constructions, abandoned homes are transformed into guest rooms, reception areas, and restaurants, uniting into a single accommodation experience.

Currently, there are over 150 diffusi in Italy, with other European countries beginning to embrace this innovative concept. Below are five outstanding examples to consider for your next travel adventure.

1. The Castle on a Hill

This summer, Albania welcomed its first diffuso, Kruja Albergo Diffuso, located near the historic Kruja Castle, just 22 miles from Tirana, the capital. This fascinating fortress, constructed in the fifth and sixth centuries, encompasses 30 historic homes, with 23 rooms currently available. A bar and hammam are planned for development in the near future.

2. The Nature Reset

Croatia introduced its first scattered hotel, Ražnjenvića Dvori A.D. 1307, in 2014 in the town of Polača, nestled in the Dalmatia region. Six stone cottages from the early 1900s have been transformed into one- and two-bedroom suites. Guests can enjoy excursions such as cycling to Lake Vrana, exploring olive groves through tours and tastings, or even participating in asparagus harvesting activities.

3. The Wine Retreat

In Assignan, France, the 24-room Castigno Château & Village Wine Hotel & Resort emphasizes gastronomy. Visitors can dine at the Michelin-starred restaurant, La Table, indulge in wine tastings, or explore the unique bottle-shaped cellar. Each guest room, spread over 13 medieval structures, is adorned with tones inspired by red wine.

4. The Serene Stay

Another remarkable addition in Italy is Borgo dei Gatti, which opened last year in Golferenzo, Lombardy. The medieval cottages feature preserved stone walls, terra-cotta floors, and wooden beams, along with frescoed ceilings. Recently, a luxurious spa was added, including a Finnish sauna and a serene tearoom.

5. The Over-the-top Escape

Among Italy’s most ambitious offerings is Monteverdi Tuscany, located in the hilltop town of Castiglioncello del Trinoro. Since its launch in 2012, it has expanded to 31 rooms and suites, including multiple villas, alongside a wellness center and spa. Additionally, this property hosts an artists-in-residence program, with musical performances held in the town’s historic 700-year-old church.
