Fortunately, there are several initiatives, such as the Cammino Materano, aimed at enhancing its accessibility and popularity.
What is the Cammino Materano?
The Cammino Materano is a unique hiking project that centers around the city of Matera. It consists of six routes that connect this iconic city to various locations across Southern Italy, spanning the beautiful regions of Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania. This project is promoted by local volunteers and businesses, making it an excellent opportunity for travelers to enjoy slow travel while exploring the heart of what used to be Magna Graecia, rich with history and peculiarities.
The Routes
Currently, the Cammino Materano offers one fully operational route, along with another that is nearing completion. The fully functional route, the Via Peuceta, stretches for 160 kilometers and connects Matera to the city of Bari. This route is equipped with information points, hostels, and maps to guide travelers. On the other hand, the Via Ellenica, which is in its final stages of construction, covers 290 kilometers and features fifteen stops. This route will take you from Brindisi to Matera, connecting you with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Matera itself and the iconic trulli of Alberobello, as well as the natural beauty of the Terra delle Gravine Park.
Support for Travelers
Travelers can rely on guides and information points to assist them during their journey. Furthermore, they have the opportunity to receive a certificate known as testimonium, verifying that they have walked at least 100 kilometers on the route, similar to the compostela for the Way of St James.
