Scenic Walk Across Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk is an experience that should be on every tourist’s itinerary while visiting Sydney!

Not to be confused with the BridgeClimb, the Bridge Walk offers a unique experience for everyone. Although often overshadowed by the iconic BridgeClimb, the Harbour Bridge Walk has much to offer in its own right.

BridgeClimb vs Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk

To clarify, the BridgeClimb is a commercial venture that involves climbing the top arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Paying for the experience allows climbers to ascend 134m above sea level, providing an unforgettable view of Sydney. However, due to safety regulations, personal cameras are not permitted. Fortunately, a professional photo is included in the package, and keepsakes can be purchased at the gift shop.

The more affordable option is the Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk, which is accessible to everyone.

If the BridgeClimb doesn’t quite suit your style, the free Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk is a fantastic alternative. Starting from Milsons Point, you can stroll across to The Rocks without any cost involved. This option allows for full flexibility in your schedule, giving you ample opportunity to take your time.

What’s the best part about the Bridge Walk? You are completely free to take as many photos as you wish. As you traverse the walkway, you’ll have stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and other key landmarks, making it an ideal choice for photography enthusiasts. For those interested, a self-guided walking tour is available for a minimal fee.

Accessing the Harbour Bridge can be achieved via the pedestrian walkway on the eastern side of the bridge, connecting The Rocks with Milsons Point. Alternatively, you can begin your walk at Milsons Point and head toward The Rocks.

How to Get There

For an easy start, consider obtaining a map from the Sydney Visitor Centre at The Rocks, which will point you to the access points for the Sydney Harbour Bridge walkway. Alternatively, you can inquire at the centre for detailed directions.

While in the Rocks area, look for a sign located along George St, just south of Argyle St. It will guide you to a long sheltered flight of stairs leading to the bridge’s southern end, situated near Gloucester St and Cumberland St.

The bridge can also be approached from the south via Cahill Walk, which runs along the Cahill Expressway above the Circular Quay train terminal. Pedestrians can access this walkway from Circular Quay through a staircase, lift, or from the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens.

Take Your Time to Soak in the Sights

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk typically takes around thirty minutes to complete. However, you’re welcome to take your time and enjoy the scenic views along the way. The walk from the Rocks to Milsons Point is particularly picturesque, filled with numerous breathtaking viewpoints, so don’t forget your camera. When starting at Circular Quay or the Botanic Gardens, the journey could extend an additional 15 minutes to half an hour.

Be sure to wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun and dress appropriately for the weather. Comfortable walking shoes are always a wise choice. If you aim for the bridge’s highest point, remember that the BridgeClimb remains an option.
