Robot Dog Patrols Singapore Park to Promote Social Distancing
A video has surfaced showcasing a futuristic “robot dog” navigating a park in Singapore, sparking global interest. Released by The Strait Times, the footage features the yellow machine gliding past onlookers, who are quick to document the experience on their devices.
Developed by Boston Dynamics, this headless, four-legged robot dog will be stationed in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park for a trial period. The primary aim is to remind the public about the importance of social distancing. According to The Strait Times, this pilot program is a collaborative effort between NParks and the Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG).
Known as Spot, the robot dog is equipped to broadcast recorded messages, encouraging individuals to maintain safe distances from one another. Boston Dynamics describes Spot as a versatile robot that “navigates where wheeled robots cannot, while carrying payloads for extended periods.” It boasts 360-degree vision and obstacle avoidance capabilities, allowing it to be either remotely controlled or programmed for autonomous missions. Moreover, Spot is fitted with cameras that can estimate the number of park visitors, thereby determining when an announcement is warranted.
Following an initial two-week trial where the robot dog is expected to patrol a three-kilometre stretch of the River Plains area during off-peak hours, a decision will be made regarding its long-term deployment.
A similar robot has also been employed at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital as part of efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
