Traveling the World as a Single Mom | Episode 21 | Travel + Leisure Podcast

Inspiring Stories of Single Moms Who Travel

As we navigate through 2020, iBestTravel‘s first podcast, Let’s Go Together, continues to introduce listeners to some of the most inspiring and spirited travelers in the world. This season, we have met individuals working to preserve their native cultures in Alaska and Hawaii, an Olympic athlete traveling the world in her hijab, and plus-size travelers who have shared their experiences traveling in a bigger body.

Exploring the Journey of Traveling Single Moms

In this week’s episode, host Kellee Edwards is joined by Amoya Shante, the founder of Single Moms Do Travel, and Libryia Jones, co-founder of Wandering Moms Community, to discuss what it’s like raising children as single moms while broadening their horizons through travel.

The Experience of Liberia Jones

Liberia Jones has been traveling with her daughter, who is now 17, since she was eight. Together, they have explored near and far, including an entire year traveling together. In addition to being a dedicated mother, Jones leads a community of over 20,000 women through Wandering Moms, an organization that facilitates travel for women.

“The community and website focus on educating, encouraging, and supporting moms who want to travel because there are often stereotypes about single moms and the limitations they face. Our goal is to shift that narrative for all moms,” Jones explained.

Amoya Shante’s Resilient Journey

For Amoya Shante, traveling became a crucial opportunity to reconnect with her kids following an abusive marriage. After spending over two years traveling the world, Shante eventually settled in Merida, Mexico, where she currently leads Single Moms Do Travel, a community of single mothers living abroad and redefining the narrative surrounding single motherhood.

Insights and Advice for Traveling Parents

Throughout the episode, the trio discusses how they discovered their passion for travel, the importance of exposing children to new cultures, and the challenges that arise. Additionally, they share insights into what their kids think about traveling, as well as practical advice for parents aspiring to take their children on incredible journeys.
