Solo Travel Insights with Gloria Atanmo
Have you been eager to embark on a solo travel journey but are uncertain where to begin? You’re in luck! On this week’s episode of Let’s Go Together, the first podcast from iBestTravel, we feature a guest who can help you get started.
Gloria Atanmo, affectionately known as Glo, joins host extraordinaire Kellee Edwards in the 13th installment of the podcast to discuss her experiences as a Black woman who relishes solo travel.
Glo, the creator behind The Blog Abroad, first ventured into the world of solo travel during her semester abroad in the UK, viewing it as her only opportunity to explore the globe. “For me, especially as a Black woman, I considered this the one chance to leave my country,” Glo shared with Edwards. Today, Glo has traveled to 81 countries and has transformed her life into that of a successful travel blogger, business coach, educator, and more.
During the episode, Glo and Edwards dive into the unique challenges faced by women traveling alone. “As women, we often need to navigate the world with a heightened sense of awareness compared to our male counterparts,” she explained. Furthermore, they discuss the stereotypes that Black women encounter while traveling solo, noting, “Immediately, I confront various misconceptions about what it means to be a solo female traveler, particularly a Black woman.”
However, Glo also articulates the joys of traveling solo. “There’s a major misconception between traveling solo and feeling lonely,” she expressed to Edwards. “I assure you, when traveling solo, you will never feel isolated, especially when you embody an inviting energy. I end up making more friends while traveling alone.”
Throughout their conversation, Edwards and Glo explore some of her favorite travel destinations, recount thrilling adventures—including hitchhiking in the Balkans and clubbing in Latvia—and reflect on how her successful blog and business came to fruition.
