Security Alert Issued
The United States Department of State has recently issued a warning for tourists regarding the safety of app-based transportation services like Uber in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This warning is particularly relevant for popular tourist destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
Concerns with App-Based Services
According to the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico, “Application-based car services such as Uber and Cabify are available in many Mexican cities, and generally offer another safe alternative to taxis.” However, reports indicate that official complaints against these services have arisen, and disputes between app-based drivers and local taxi unions have sometimes escalated to violence, endangering U.S. citizens.
The alert follows a series of incidents where medallion taxi drivers have harassed and attacked Uber drivers and riders, as well as blocked major roads leading to the hotel district in Cancun.
Historically, ride-share apps faced restrictions in Cancun, yet a recent court injunction lifted these limitations, permitting Uber to operate once more.
Cancun Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta has publicly stated her intent to safeguard the resort’s reputation and the safety of visitors, urging taxi drivers to cease their aggressive actions.
General Safety Recommendations
Overall, the State Department categorizes Quintana Roo under its “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” warning due to potential risks associated with crime and kidnapping. They advise travelers to maintain a high level of situational awareness, steer clear of areas known for illicit activities, and to depart from potentially dangerous situations promptly.
Despite these concerns, Cancun continues to attract American tourists, boasting an array of hotels, stunning beaches, and ancient Mayan ruins. Moreover, lesser-known destinations throughout Quintana Roo, such as Chetumal, Bacalar, and Mahahual, offer unique experiences for those looking to explore beyond the main attractions.
