Record Sale: Steve McQueen’s 1968 Bullitt Mustang Fetches $3.4 Million at Mecum Auctions

The Legendary Bullitt Mustang: A Piece of Automotive History

The original Bullitt Mustang, famously driven by the “King of Cool,” Steve McQueen, in the classic 1968 film “Bullitt,” has officially changed hands. Previously owned by the Kiernan family since 1974, Robert Kiernan purchased this iconic 1968 “Bullet” Mustang for just $3,500. McQueen attempted to buy the Mustang multiple times; however, it was Ms. Kiernan who drove it as her everyday vehicle until the clutch malfunctioned in 1980.

It is surprising to note that this legendary car served as a daily driver for six years. Imagine witnessing this car frequently without realizing its significance! While it appeared to be just another Highland Green 1968 Fastback, it must have intrigued some individuals who suspected its cinematic past.

After the clutch issue, the Mustang was relegated to the family garage at 65,000 miles. The vehicle was occasionally adjusted with each move, but notably, the odometer remained static until 2001, coinciding with Ford’s reintroduction of the Bullitt Mustang. During this time, interest was renewed by Robert and his son, Sean. Unfortunately, Robert’s Parkinson’s disease diagnosis became a priority, delaying their restoration project. Once again, the anticipation grew with Ford’s subsequent Bullitt introduction in 2008. However, Robert’s declining health shifted responsibilities onto Sean, who had to manage family endeavors while also caring for the iconic vehicle.

Tragically, Robert passed away in 2014. At that moment, Sean became the custodian of the Bullitt. Until then, the knowledge of the car’s existence was limited. This changed during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show when the original Bullitt Mustang took a prominent position next to the newly released 2019 Mustang Bullitt. Enthusiasts agreed that the original Bullitt certainly outshined its modern counterpart.

With the excitement sparked by the car’s reintroduction, Sean showcased the Mustang on various tours worldwide, allowing fans from different regions to appreciate this iconic piece of automotive history. Indeed, every Mustang enthusiast vividly remembers the thrilling chase scene where Lt. Frank Bullitt tracks down the antagonists as they sped away in a 1968 Charger.

Ultimately, Sean and his family decided to pass on the crown of this treasured car, with Mecum Auctions managing the sale. On January 10, 2020, the Bullitt was sold for a staggering $3,400,000, nearly 1,000 percent more than its original value in 1974. Including buyer’s fees, the final sale price reached $3,740,000, marking it as the most valuable Mustang ever auctioned by Mecum.
