Stubb’s Austin: A Perfect Mix of Music and BBQ
A major concert venue that doubles as a barbecue joint, Stubb’s features mid-level touring acts ranging from the Dropkick Murphys to Blondie. This sprawling limestone building, established in the 1850s, exudes a laid-back, rustic feel. The outdoor amphitheater accommodates just over 2,000 attendees, while the two-story indoor performance space offers a more intimate atmosphere. Recognized as one of “The Best Big Rooms in America” by Rolling Stone magazine, Stubb’s is celebrated for its excellent acoustics and convenient access to food and restrooms.
Tips for Enjoying an Outdoor Show
Visitors should note that security personnel at Stubb’s can be particularly vigilant. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid wandering into restricted areas, which may vary from show to show. Since the venue has dusty, gravelly grounds, wearing open-toed shoes may not be advisable. For optimal viewing and quick access to bars, find a spot roughly midway between the stage and the back of the venue — a slight elevation will enhance your vantage point. Additionally, during summer events, the heat can be quite intense, especially at sold-out shows; however, Stubb’s provides complimentary water and industrial-strength fans to alleviate discomfort.
Favorite Dishes
The pulled pork sandwich is a standout favorite among patrons, along with generous sides like mac-and-cheese, sweet potato fries, and cole slaw. The brisket is consistently tender, making it a recommended choice. While the ribs can be inconsistent, the peppery barbecue sauce is a must-try and is available for purchase to take home. Stubb’s offers an entire line of sauces, rubs, and marinades inspired by C.B. Stubblefield’s original recipes.
Sunday Gospel Brunch
Although purists might argue that the music isn’t strictly gospel, it remains rootsy, bluesy, and captivating. With an enticing bloody Mary bar and a buffet featuring cheese grits, biscuits, and brisket, guests may find temptation difficult to resist. However, the uplifting atmosphere created by the music provides ample opportunity for indulgence without guilt.
Franklin’s Alternative
The immensely popular Franklin Barbecue lies just a quarter mile away on East 11th Street. For those who would rather avoid the long lines for nearly perfect brisket, Stubb’s serves as a solid alternative. With its multi-level layout, there is generally ample seating available, ensuring minimal wait times.
History
The original Stubb’s was founded in Lubbock and hosted musical legends such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Ely during the 1970s and early ’80s. After facing financial difficulties, owner C.B. Stubblefield relocated to Austin in the late 1980s and opened a new venue in north Austin, serving blues music and barbecue until 1989. Sadly, he passed away in 1995 before he could realize his vision for the historic spot on Red River Street; however, friends, family, and investors have successfully preserved the Stubb’s legacy.
Parking
Although there is no on-site parking available, multiple pay lots are located within walking distance for visitor convenience.
