During the final leg of A/W23 fashion week in Paris, it became apparent that sheer, skin-baring looks were dominating the runways. This inspired a creative approach centered around the concept of ‘less is more.’ Consequently, a spring/summer photo shoot in a captivating location was essential. Cape Verde emerged as the perfect backdrop with its unique topography. Despite having never visited, the cinematic dunes of Boa Vista and the expansive white-sand beaches immediately captivated my imagination.

The Unforgettable Shooting Location

Location-scouting a country for the first time is both exhilarating and daunting. With so many sources like Google Images and social media, expectations can often lead to disillusionment. The true essence of Cape Verde’s landscapes only became clear upon arrival. Research into Boa Vista island revealed its varied terrain, prompting me to enlist the help of a Portugal-based producer. This partnership ensured we explored selected spots effectively, leaving us in awe of the beauty we discovered—the perfect environment to let the sun shine on our creative vision.

A Tricky Shot the Photographer Pulled Off

Finding unique and secluded locations is vital for creating a sense of mystery in photography. Therefore, hours spent researching paid off as we sought out breathtaking backdrops. However, many places are now frequented by photographers, even at dawn. Our off-road venture led us to discover a secluded red mud flat, and a perfect black rock formation overlooking the sea became our exquisite backdrop, showcasing high-fashion pieces in scenic splendor.

The Best Supper After a Long Shoot Day

After a full day of shooting, we found a charming local eatery that offered delicious pizzas and pasta—just what we needed after working in the desert for two consecutive sunsets. Finding a meal close to our accommodation was a relief, allowing us to unwind after an exhausting day. Surprisingly, during our second night, the town experienced a seven-hour power cut, adding an unexpected twist to our adventure.

Unexpected Challenges

Venture off-road, and you quickly learn about the realities of being out of reach. Initially, the lack of phone signal created anxiety, but it soon transformed into a liberating experience. Living without modern conveniences—such as a bathroom or consistent access to electricity—was a challenge we adapted to. Additionally, the wind played its own tricks, making shooting on the dunes difficult for both our equipment and the garments.

Silk chiffon skirt with bow tie neck, £1,650; silk satin and tulle stretch triangle bra with lace details, £385, both Dolce & Gabbana.

Sheer silk blouse, £1,035; front kick skirt, £1,385, both Givenchy.

The Most Memorable Look

Amidst the stunning runway selections, the supermodel Giselle effortlessly showcased diverse styles. However, a fashion conundrum arose with a complex garment featuring five armholes. Through teamwork and a bit of laughter, we successfully navigated the challenges, proving the joy of fashion lies in the creative journey.
