Every ‘White Lotus’ fan needs to visit this new Italian restaurant – here’s why

London is not short of beautiful restaurants. Some of the world’s dreamiest places to eat are here, from sky-high dining spaces with jaw-dropping views to underground eateries with a penchant for theatrics. However, one name has become synonymous with London’s most dramatic restaurants. From maximalist interiors to extravagant Italian dishes, Big Mamma stays firm as the name to know.
You may recognize this Parisian-born brand from its trio of restaurant openings that have landed in London over the past couple of years – first Gloria in Shoreditch, then Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia, followed by Ave Mario in Covent Garden. Each new restaurant is inspired by a cherished childhood memory from Italy, serving as the foundation for its unique concept and design.
Ave Mario, for instance, draws inspiration from memories of lunch by the Duomo in Siena, while Gloria evokes the glitz and glamour of Capri in the 1980s. Circolo Popolare was imagined as a whimsical wedding by the Sicilian coast. By centering every detail around these themes, each restaurant becomes a distinctive venue with its own story. These locations are perfect for celebrations, making them excellent choices for memorable gatherings.
In January 2023, the beloved London ensemble welcomed a new sister outpost. Jacuzzi is designed to evoke childhood memories of exploring grand Venetian villas – imagine wandering through gilded rooms adorned with lavish furnishings, magnificent artwork, hedonistic treasures, and lush gardens filled with life. Coupled with Big Mamma’s signature nostalgic design, you find yourself in a fantastical world that exceeds your expectations.
Jacuzzi brings a realm of epicurean opulence to West London. Set in a once-dilapidated bank on High Street Kensington, the interior resembles a scene from The White Lotus, illustrating extravagance at every turn. Think red banquettes, twisted ivy, backlit bars, exposed brick arches, and dangling chandeliers – these grand features create an overwhelming first impression that captivates visitors immediately.
The design team, Studio Kiki, sourced each item from antique markets and second-hand vintage stores throughout Europe. The multi-story layout offers various interpretations of the central theme. The ground floor resembles an old-fashioned dining hall, characterized by soaring stucco ceilings, illuminated shelves burdened with an array of bottles, and a central piece—a giant lemon tree—creating a vibrant atmosphere perfect for hosting events.
Ascend the grand staircase to discover the mezzanine level. Here, you’re transported to a serene Italian courtyard, exuding laid-back sophistication. This space is ideal for leisurely lunches, sipping on Martinis, and enjoying olives. The retractable roof floods the room with sunlight, while tables arranged in balcony-style alcoves contribute to the inviting ambiance. Adorned with porcelain cherubs, china bowls of lemons, and whimsical parrot statuettes, this area is a feast for the senses, additionally highlighted by the distinctive busts reminiscent of The White Lotus.
Jacuzzi’s culinary offerings maintain Big Mamma’s promise of generous plates of Italian classics, each adorned with an ornate flourish. This new establishment presents a more sophisticated menu than its predecessors in London. Signature dishes include the culatello—thinly sliced cured meat served with gnocco fritto—and Maldon Rock oysters drizzled with balsamic vinegar and chili oil. Further culinary highlights include lobster seafood risotto and a sumptuous platter of beef carpaccio garnished with Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh truffle shavings. To finish, don’t miss the giant chocolate mousse, crafted with a remarkable amount of Valrhona chocolate, ensuring a decadent treat.
Jacuzzi boasts an impressive wine list, featuring Franciacorta, a sparkling wine from Northern Italy. Yet, the cocktail menu is equally enticing, filled with delightful creations that mirror the restaurant’s playful flair. One standout is the Jacuzzi twist on an Espresso Martini, dubbed “Make Mine a Moka.” This innovative drink combines Vecchia Romagna brandy, coffee liqueur, mint amaro, and white-chocolate syrup, served from a moka pot into a frosty Martini glass. It’s a fitting conclusion to what is poised to become London’s most talked-about dining destination.
