Six destinations have been shortlisted for the 2020 Beautiful Awards in , celebrating the environmental excellence of communities, businesses, schools, and individuals across the country.
The annual awards are run by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, an organisation committed to driving environmental change through the education, inspiration, and empowerment of communities for over half a century. There are 13 award categories, and each finalist in the location-based categories must demonstrate sustainable and environmentally-conscious behaviors across four key areas: litter prevention and waste minimisation, community beautification, recycling projects, and sustainable tourism.
According to the recently announced shortlist, and are competing for the Most Beautiful City award, whereas Cambridge and are pitted against each other in the Most Beautiful Large Town category. Furthermore, and Arrowtown are contending for the title of Most Beautiful Small Town. One of these six destinations will be named the Supreme Towns & Cities winner, receiving a mural to enhance their community, valued at NZ$10,000 (US$6633).
“We have had some amazing nominations this year that demonstrate how, by working together, we can emerge from this pandemic as a stronger community and a stronger nation, leading to a more sustainable future,” states Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO, Heather Saunderson. “All the finalists of towns and cities have put in considerable effort to secure their positions in the top six. Celebrating environmental excellence, recognizing small victories, and showcasing beautiful behaviors—both personal and professional—are now more vital than ever.”
