Stunning Filming Locations of Popular TV Series
While we rarely judge a TV series solely for its filming locations, there are some shows where the landscape and backgrounds provide as much character as the protagonists themselves. Below, we explore the TV shows from recent years that have made us curious about their filming locations, often inspiring travel aspirations as we binge-watch the seasons.
The Last of Us
Although the crumbling dystopian world of The Last of Us may not seem like the ideal holiday destination, it features breathtaking landscapes that spark curiosity about its filming sites. This series showcases remnants of major cities like Boston, Kansas City, and Jackson, Wyoming, filmed across a remarkable 180 locations. Much of the primary action was shot in Alberta, Canada. Locations such as High River, Canmore, Waterton Lakes National Park, and Mount Royal University appear—some are recognizable, but all have been modified to fit the show’s aesthetic.
Virgin River
Set in a picturesque northern Californian town, Virgin River illustrates life amidst redwoods, waterfalls, and stunning scenery. Interestingly, the series was filmed in Hollywood North, a burgeoning filming center just outside of Vancouver, Canada. Recognizable Canadian vistas contribute to its authenticity, including Mel’s waterside cabin, which serves as the caretaker’s house in Murdo Frazer Park on Vancouver’s North Shore; her workplace at New Westminster in the city’s southeast; and the beautiful woods, water, and skyscrapers found in Burnaby, located on Vancouver’s east side.
