Exciting Updates for the Subaru Crosstrek
Subaru fans and automotive reviewers have long requested a more powerful Crosstrek, and this year, their wish is finally coming true. The introduction of a new 2.5-liter engine will be available on upper trim levels of the new Crosstrek model, as confirmed by Subaru of America CEO Tom Doll. The existing 2.0-liter flat-four engine will still be standard on the base models.
New Engine Performance
The announcement was made during Doll’s speech at a recent NADA convention in Las Vegas. He revealed that the robust 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will be a feature of the new Crosstrek Sport trim and the higher-end Limited trim. Meanwhile, the base Crosstrek and Premium models are likely to continue with the 2.0-liter engine.
Addressing Customer Feedback
Why the upgrade to a larger engine? According to Doll, feedback from customers indicated that “the Crosstrek was maybe a little underpowered with the 2.0-liter engine.” With the 2.5-liter engine, Subaru aims to resolve this issue.
Acceleration and Competitiveness
The Crosstrek is not the fastest option in its class, but it holds its own. The CVT-equipped model boasts a 0-60 mph time of 9.0 seconds, which outpaces competitors like the Honda HR-V. Furthermore, for those who prefer manual control, Subaru offers a manual transmission option.
Expected Specifications for the New Engine
While official specifications and pricing for the new engine option are yet to be released, it is anticipated that the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, similar to that found in the Subaru Forester, Legacy, and Outback, will produce roughly 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This represents a notable improvement over the outputs of the 2.0-liter engine.
Future Possibilities for the Crosstrek
In discussions regarding potential turbocharged variants of the Crosstrek, Doll mentioned that while demand is high, Subaru is focused on meeting current sales objectives before considering such expansions.
For enthusiasts awaiting a more potent engine option, this development is certainly a cause for celebration. The Crosstrek has earned recognition for its comfort, spacious interior, off-road capabilities, and overall value. With the inclusion of enhanced power, the driving experience promises to improve significantly.
