The Sunseeker, Byron Bay – A Design Destination

Why experience The Sunseeker?
Immerse yourself in the creative vibrancy of Byron Bay as The Sunseeker showcases the design talents of local artisans and makers.

Set the Scene

This revitalized motel located on Bangalow Road, just 10 minutes from Byron Bay town, is the latest destination attracting a stylish crowd. Its retro design appeals to road-tripping young families seeking spacious yet affordable accommodations.

The Backstory

Originally a tired motel, The Sunseeker has undergone a stunning transformation led by first-time moteliers Jess and Dave Frid, alongside a team of notable local artists and designers. The motel beautifully reflects the rich Northern Rivers creative community, now serving as a design hub filled with art and collectibles. Jess expresses their vision: “We wanted to create a low-key, yet exciting place where families can feel welcome.” Collaborating with eco-conscious builders, the original charm of the Eighties redbrick motel has been retained while creatively repurposing materials from the property.

The Rooms

Offering 12 spacious motel-style rooms, including standard, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom family suites, each features a patio or balcony overlooking the pool or gardens. The surf-shack vibe is complemented by curated details like crystal-adorned terrazzo benchtops and organic shower products infused with native botanicals. The bungalows, perfect for families, include a queen bed, bunk beds, a fully equipped kitchen, outdoor claw-foot bath, and barbecue.

Food and Drink

In keeping with the laid-back motel atmosphere, there is no restaurant on site. Guests can order hampers from the nearby Bay Grocer, while those in the bungalows can enjoy barbecue meal kits. The tiki bar by the poolside serves a selection of small-batch organic wines and beers, perfect for unwinding.

The Neighbourhood

Situated on the outskirts of Byron Bay, the motel provides easy access to both the excitement of the town and the tranquility away from the summer hustle. The beautiful Tallow Beach is just a 10-minute walk away, and charming nearby towns like Newrybar and Federal are only a short drive away, offering great local restaurants.

The Service

The service is friendly and casual, fostering a warm “we’re all friends here” atmosphere.

For Families

The Sunseeker is designed with young families in mind, where children can play freely outside by the bungalows or pool.

Eco Efforts

The motel embraces sustainability as an integral part of its ethos, implementing eco-friendly practices from renovation to using rainwater and solar power.

Accessibility Information

One of the ground-floor standard rooms is wheelchair accessible, ensuring comfort for all guests.

Unique Features

The original kidney-shaped pool and tiki cabana bar add a touch of kitsch charm, boasting a tropical Eighties aesthetic. This family-friendly environment encourages a relaxed atmosphere, with a focus on early evenings, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.
