Summary
Why Go To Venezuela?
Venezuela has earned the title of a destination many tend to avoid, primarily due to rampant inflation, unrest, and concerns about safety. However, this country’s hidden gems offer adventurous travelers a unique experience that may be worth the risk.
Travelers share reasons to visit Venezuela, previously documented in a 2015 trip. Please note that conditions may have changed since then.
During my travels through Central America and Colombia, many discouraged me from trekking into Venezuela, labeling it dangerous and unwelcoming. Surprisingly, despite numerous warnings, I found little firsthand accounts from those who ventured into this captivating yet misunderstood country.
5 Reasons To Visit Venezuela
Despite prevalent rumors and cautionary tales, there are several remarkable qualities about Venezuela that deserve recognition, making it a worthy travel destination.
1. Venezuela Is Unbelievably Cheap
Venezuela topped my list as the most affordable country I have visited. Many foreigners exchange currency on the black market to take advantage of the favorable rates. With just one dollar, I could indulge in twelve beers or secure luxurious accommodations and incredible tours without breaking the bank.
2. The People Of Venezuela Are Friendly
Encounters with locals were often filled with warmth and curiosity. Despite my limited Spanish and unconventional appearance, I received kindness and assistance throughout my journey. I discovered a vibrant Couchsurfing community, leading to genuine friendships and heartfelt interactions that revealed the true spirit of Venezuelans.
3. You Can Fill Up A Car For 1 Cent In Venezuela
This country’s astonishingly low oil prices astonished me, as I could fill my tank for less than one US cent. Venezuela is endowed with the world’s largest oil reserves, making fuel cheaper than water and enabling extensive road trips without financial strain.
4. The Rum and Food Are Amazing!
Venezuela boasts some of the finest rum globally, and prices allow for indulgence. A bottle of premium Santa Teresa rum costs around $4, a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere. Additionally, culinary experiences are abundant and incredibly affordable; for under $10, you can savor an exquisite three-course meal paired with cocktails.
5. It Is So Worth The Risk
Though it took time to understand Venezuela’s complex socioeconomic situation, the beauty and adventure it offers make the risks seem minimal for backpackers. With breathtaking sights like the table-top mountain of Roraima and friendly local communities, I found my time here incredibly rewarding.
With the right mindset and preparation, I would wholeheartedly recommend Venezuela to seasoned travelers. It’s a remarkable destination that promises unforgettable experiences for those willing to embrace its challenges.
Conclusion
Venezuela may not fit the mold of a typical travel destination, but for adventurous souls, the rewards are substantial. The country’s unique culture, friendly locals, and stunning landscapes create a rich experience for those bold enough to explore it.
