Naming engines has been a trend for quite some time. Some automotive companies, like Dodge with its Hellcat supercharged V-8, or Ford’s Voodoo V-8 in the Mustang Shelby GT350, assign unique names to their specialized engines. Even though Tesla vehicles are powered by electric motors rather than traditional engines, the EV manufacturer has decided to designate names to some of its newer powertrains—beginning with the Tesla Raven powertrain.

The Meaning Behind the Name Raven

Despite the reference to a bird, Tesla’s new Raven system derives its name from the character Mystique (Raven Darkhölme) from the X-Men franchise, known for her ability to change her appearance on command. This association makes sense, considering that the Tesla Model S can transform from a conventional car into a high-performance vehicle at the touch of a button.

Performance and Features of the Raven Powertrain

The Raven powertrain is currently offered in the Tesla Model S and Model X, specifically in Performance and Long Range variants. This advanced powertrain integrates the most substantial battery available for these models with a rear motor sourced from the Model 3 Performance, repositioned on the front axle of the larger vehicles. The permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor provides enhanced efficiency and power compared to the previous induction motor, delivering approximately 690 horsepower and 824 lb-ft of torque.

Adaptive Suspension and Drive Modes

Upgrades associated with the Raven powertrain extend beyond electric motors. Vehicles equipped with the Raven system also feature an adaptive air suspension that is adjustable based on driving conditions. Users can control the suspension settings via Tesla’s performance menu, allowing for lower suspension on highways to reduce drag and offering various damping modes: Comfort, Standard, and Sport.

Impressive Acceleration

Even prior to the Raven powertrain, the Tesla Model S P100D was recognized as the fastest production car tested. Clocking an astonishing 0 to 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds, this car exemplifies remarkable engineering, weighing in at 4,891 pounds. With the introduction of the Raven powertrain, the anticipation for even greater performance continues to grow.
