After more than a year without Broadway shows in New York City, it has been announced that they can reopen this September, following New York State’s health and safety guidelines.
Broadway theaters suspended their performances shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Now, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced tickets will go on sale on May 6 for shows starting September 14, with performances at 100% capacity.
As one of the world’s greatest centers for arts and culture, New York City is gradually reopening its renowned attractions, including the Museum of Natural History, the Guggenheim art gallery, and the Bronx Zoo. This announcement builds upon the reopening of performing arts and live entertainment venues last month.
“Visitors from all around the world have come to New York to experience the arts and culture and see iconic performances on Broadway. Unfortunately, the pandemic paused this unique New York experience,” said Governor Cuomo. “Now, as we continuously monitor the data and reopen our economy, we are on track to resume full-capacity performances on Broadway this September, reviving this beloved attraction.”
Moreover, preparations are underway to provide safe environments for audiences, performers, and employees ahead of September. Importantly, should performances be postponed due to public health conditions, theaters are committed to offering customer-friendly refund and exchange policies.
Speaking to Fox 5, Actors Equity’s spokesperson, Brandon Lorenz, mentioned that rehearsal time is essential for actors and dancers to prepare for their return. “That is very challenging athletic work,” he explained. “Typically, Broadway dancers maintain their fitness by training regularly while actively working on a show, but this has been significantly disrupted by the pandemic.”
According to Sara Bareilles, composer and lyricist for the Broadway musical Waitress, this announcement is what the Broadway community and its fans have been eagerly anticipating. “It’s time to get back to work, and I’m excited to be back on stage very soon,” she stated. “Nothing compares to Broadway, and it’s coming back stronger than ever.”
