We love Sri Lanka. Having visited Sri Lanka four times, we still manage to discover something new. It is one of the few countries that we actually felt sad leaving. No Sri Lanka trip would be complete without getting in the water. Sri Lanka is a beginner surfer’s paradise. Hikkaduwa on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast is the popular spot where we tried surfing. The sandy break cushions your fall and the waves are approachable for beginners.
If you have never surfed before, Hikkaduwa is the place to do it. It is very easy to learn here, making it perfect for first-timers. So if you are looking for something to do in Sri Lanka, give surfing a try!
Besides surfing, Hikkaduwa offers a long sandy beach filled with beach bars, resorts, and shopping. So spend some time relaxing in this popular expat town.
2. Aragum Bay
On the west coast of Sri Lanka lies Aragum Bay, a popular beach renowned for its bigger waves, making it an excellent spot for surfing. This is where you’ll find many surfers hanging out, waiting to catch the perfect wave. The surfing season differs from that of Hikkaduwa, so check when it’s best to surf on the west coast.
Arugam Bay not only offers perfect waves but also possesses a relaxed vibe and beautiful beaches, making it a perfect getaway. Explore local cuisine and the vibrant nightlife of Arugam Bay, where you can enjoy delectable seafood and lively beach parties.

3. Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Nothing prepared us for the awe-inspiring sight of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Known as the ‘Lion Rock Fortress,’ this ancient palace and fortress complex enthralled us with its sheer magnitude and ingenuity. The arduous climb to the summit was rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
During the climb, take your time to see its impressive frescoes, the mirror wall, and the lion gate. As a significant archaeological site, Sigiriya is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks.
Set amidst beautiful scenery, surrounded by jungle, villages, and farmland, Sigiriya Rock is a mesmerizing place. Monkeys frolic on the trails, and crocodiles inhabit the moat. While the entry fee may seem steep, the stunning views and informative museum are worth it.
Hiking to the top of Sigiriya Rock takes about an hour. It’s advisable to go early in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures. If you are passionate about history and archaeology, Sigiriya is a must-visit location in Sri Lanka.

5. Go on Safari in Yala National Park
Yala National Park is among the few places globally where one can see leopards in their natural habitat. We found Yala to be one of the top activities to do in Sri Lanka. The thrill of exploring the park in our safari truck while observing wildlife is unforgettable.
This incredible reserve is teeming with exotic wildlife, including leopards, sun bears, elephants, buffaloes, peacocks, monkeys, crocodiles, and monitor lizards. A jeep safari is the best way to experience these majestic creatures up close.
The anticipation of spotting a leopard or a playful elephant is exhilarating. Yala is not just a safari; it is a captivating encounter with nature that yields cherished memories.
6. Join the Adam’s Peak Pilgrimage
The top attraction in Sri Lanka, in my opinion, is Adam’s Peak. Our sunrise trek to the summit was one of our most memorable experiences in the country. This sacred site draws thousands of pilgrims from December to April, who come to pay homage to the first place that Adam placed his foot on earth after being cast down from Heaven.
The hike does not require technical skills, but it is indeed a workout. Completing this spiritual journey brings a sense of accomplishment. Adam’s Peak should be on your must-do list when visiting Sri Lanka.

A trip to Sri Lanka is incomplete without enjoying a scenic train ride. Sri Lankan trains provide a nostalgic journey through beautiful hills and valleys, offering mesmerizing views that are among the best worldwide.
A top train journey is from Kandy to Ella. This ride uniquely crosses the famous Nine Arch Bridge, a favorite spot for travelers and photographers alike.
We opted for the observation car to fully appreciate the changing landscapes while enjoying local tea and socializing with fellow passengers. Do not miss this opportunity when visiting Sri Lanka!
