A Dream Realized in New England

As a native Texan, New England was often portrayed as a far-off dream, a glamorous place abundant with sailboats, lobster, and rich history. Living in the Texas panhandle, miles away from the ocean, New England seemed almost mythical, far removed from my everyday life.

During a recent road trip from New York City to Maine, I had the chance to immerse myself in the New England fantasy. While roadside lobster shacks and a relaxed lifestyle captured the essence of my dreams, my overnight stay at Kennebunk’s White Barn Inn was not just a memorable experience but marked one of the best luxury hotels I have encountered in the U.S.

Features of the White Barn Inn

Quintessentially American, the White Barn Inn is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, boasting charming inn-style rooms and luxury waterfront cottages that are a short walk from the hotel. Each room is thoughtfully decorated, embodying a blend of classic elegance and modern refinement. For a truly special getaway, consider booking a cottage.

Luxurious Cottages at White Barn Inn

The five cottages available range from 400 to over 1,000 square feet and are equipped with fireplaces and spacious living areas, as well as access to a heated infinity pool. During my stay in the Friendship Cottage, I found the ambiance both luxurious and inviting.

Arrival and Amenities

Upon checking in at the hotel, where refreshing drinks awaited, the brief drive to the cottage set the tone for a unique experience. The Friendship Cottage, at 1,000 square feet, was more spacious than my Brooklyn apartment. The lavish bathroom featured exteriors that invite relaxation—all complemented by the warmth of a wood-burning fireplace upon entering. The cottage also offered views of the river filled with picturesque boats.

Dining Experience at White Barn Inn Restaurant

Before dinner, my partner and our dog enjoyed room service from the Canine Cuisine menu, offering gourmet options. After ensuring our furry friend was taken care of, we made our way to the acclaimed White Barn Inn Restaurant.

At the restaurant, executive chef Matthew Padilla serves an impressive menu featuring New England and Maine specialties within the rustic setting of an 1860s barn. The tasting menus offer an exquisite sampling of seasonal dishes. My must-try: the lobster roll with caviar and truffle, and the lobster served with Champagne sauce, gnocchi, and more. To enhance your experience, I recommend ordering a variety of dishes to share and selecting wine pairings.

A Night to Remember

After enjoying an incredible meal, a relaxing stroll back to the cottage made for the perfect closure to an unforgettable evening. The cozy atmosphere of the cottage, paired with the warmth of the fireplace, made me appreciate the serene beauty of Maine.

Breakfast and Reflection

The following morning, before returning to reality, we enjoyed breakfast at Little Barn, where we savored pancakes and lobster Benedict in a charming setting. This cozy spot, developed as part of the hotel’s redesign, offers delightful breakfasts and an inviting atmosphere.

Over coffee and bloody marys, we reminisced about our enchanting stay—the warmth of the cottage, the exceptional service, and the abundance of delicious lobster. Given the meticulous cleaning and COVID-19 protocols by Auberge Resorts, we felt safe and comfortable throughout our visit.

If you’re seeking a true New England experience, the White Barn Inn exceeds expectations and is not to be missed.
