In Marrakech, a contemporary arts, culture, and gastronomic scene is flourishing alongside time-worn tradition and craftsmanship. From navigating its labyrinthine medieval Medina and cool new town to cooling off in its botanical gardens or easy escapes into the desert—these are a handful of the best things to do in Marrakech.
Go on a Medina Wander
If it is your first time in Marrakech, a wander around the Medina—its medieval walled city—is a must. Dating back in parts to the 11th century, it is tempting to switch off Google Maps and twist and turn as you please around its labyrinthine streets. However, certain monuments and sights deserve your attention, including the 12th-century Kutubiyya Mosque, whose minaret stands guard over the old city and has inspired architects around the globe. Additionally, the Medersa Ben Youssef, a ravishingly ornate 14th-century Islamic school, is UNESCO-rated and worth exploring.
Visit the Tranquil Botanical Gardens
When the desert heat threatens to overwhelm, consider visiting one of Marrakech’s peaceful oases within the city. The Jardin Majorelle, which celebrates its 100th birthday in 2024, holds special significance as the former home of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, who resided in its exquisite cubist villa set in Moorish-meets-Art Deco gardens. Criss-cross its cacti-lined pathways and allow time to explore the brilliant Berber Museum and the newly opened YSL Museum. For a quieter experience, Le Jardin Secret in the Medina has roots in the 16th century, and its Islamic Gardens—a metaphor for heaven—are simply stunning.
