When iBestTravel readers head to the islands of the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, they’re craving relaxation above all else. However, the destinations that help fulfill that goal vary widely, from sun-soaked shores and exclusive resorts to rustic hideaways with pristine swimming coves and hiking trails.
How Voting Works
Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, iBestTravel asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences globally, sharing opinions on top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, and more. Nearly 165,000 readers completed the 2023 survey, which is a substantial increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. Approximately 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties.
Islands were rated on the following criteria:
- Natural attractions/beaches
- Activities/sights
- Restaurants/food
- People/friendliness
- Value
Respondents could rate each characteristic as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.
What Readers Loved
Readers emphasized three main factors when sharing their love for the islands: the people, beaches, and water. One voter praised Anguilla (No. 2), highlighting, “The island has 33 beaches — each stunning in unique ways, with the bluest water I’ve seen. The best aspect is the friendliness of the locals; they’re incredibly welcoming.” St. Vincent and the Grenadines (No. 17) also impressed, with another voter noting, “The beaches are beautiful, especially Palm Island, and the locals are friendly, with excellent snorkeling in the cays.”
Moreover, travelers can find plenty of activity under the sun. “I love that you can swim in a cove, hike a mountain, and enjoy sushi all in a single day,” recalled one visitor to Virgin Gorda (No. 7). Jamaica (No. 23) left a memorable impression on another voter, who mentioned the scenic bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae River, while Bonaire (No. 18) is recognized for “outstanding scuba diving, snorkeling, and friendly locals.”
For the second consecutive year, the Nature Island earned readers’ highest scores, making it the top pick. Below, discover what makes it a standout destination in voters’ eyes.
The Winner
Dominica
In contrast to other Caribbean islands that attract affluent crowds and showcase white-sand beaches, Dominica appeals primarily to eco-minded travelers eager to immerse themselves in rainforests, hot springs, and black-sand shores. “It is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of modern life,” shared one reader. “This is a destination everyone should have on their bucket list. The locals are warm and welcoming, and there is so much to explore!” Popular activities include hiking to spectacular sites like the famous Boiling Lake and the serene Emerald Pool in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. While the island’s natural wonders are a major draw, luxury accommodations such as Secret Bay also provide options for those seeking a more upscale experience.
This is a destination that deserves a spot on everyone’s travel list.
