How Voting Works

Each year for the World’s Best Awards survey, iBestTravel asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—sharing their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 readers completed the 2023 survey, which constitutes a 25 percent increase over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties, including hotels, cities, and cruise lines.

Hotels were classified as either resort hotels, city hotels, or safari lodges based on their location and amenities. They were rated on the following criteria:

• Rooms/facilities
• Location
• Service
• Food
• Value

For each characteristic, respondents could select a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. Consequently, the final scores represent averages of these ratings.

What Readers Loved

This year, readers once again displayed their deep, unabating love for the islands, with insular resorts nearly dominating the category, with the exception of Amanzoe at the No. 10 spot in Porto Heli.

However, there’s one island that is capturing everyone’s attention more than the rest right now, and that’s Santorini. In fact, the best hotels situated on the island of Santorini secured eight of the top 10 spots in this year’s listing.
