In our 5 Shops series, we’re excited to point you in the direction of our favorite independent retailers across some of the world’s best cities. From food markets and vintage stores to unique design shops, we’ve curated a diverse mix of local gems in one of Italy’s most vibrant cities.
Reflecting on my first visit to Rome after relocating to Italy a decade ago fills me with nostalgia. Originally from New York, I had settled on a farm in the Italian countryside, seeking a retreat from the bustling life of big cities. However, I found it impossible to resist the magnetic pull of Rome. Its streets pulse with energy—filled with people traveling in all directions, connected by tram and train lines, it was precisely the stimulation I craved.
While Rome can feel overwhelming for a visitor, it’s a magnificent place to truly live. The challenge lies in experiencing its vastness within a limited timeframe. You may be tempted to throw up your hands in exasperation. Nevertheless, if you persist, the city will gradually unveil its hidden treasures. You’ll cherish the small, colorful moments, discovering corner shops and bustling market stalls along the way. Here are my five favorite shops that embody the essence of this incredible city.
Best for Souvenirs: Co. Ro Jewels
When traveling, it can be all too easy to fill your suitcase with cheap, forgettable souvenirs. Fortunately, Co. Ro Jewels, located on Via della Scrofa near Piazza Navona, offers something special. This female-run boutique specializes in architectural jewelry and wearable art inspired by iconic Roman landmarks, such as the Colosseum and Pantheon. Although these pieces are pricier than novelty trinkets, they are timeless treasures that you’ll cherish for years to come.
Best for Local Design: Hang Roma
The picturesque streets of Monti have gained fame for their Instagram-friendly façades. Yet, beyond their aesthetic allure, these quaint shops house unique designs. At Hang Roma on Via degli Zingari, owner Federica crafts leather bags, belts, and pouches while also presenting stunning artworks from local artists. Whether you choose a print by Sara Paglia or a quirky poster from Michele Mancaniello, each purchase will be a distinct piece of Monti’s creative scene.
Best for Thrift/Vintage: Affare Fatto
Nestled in the Aventino neighborhood, Affare Fatto is a true gem among Rome’s best thrift shops. Drawing a diverse crowd, thanks to its proximity to the UN’s FAO headquarters, this treasure trove brims with unique items—from ceramics to vintage clothing. The warm and welcoming staff further enhances the delightful experience, making every visit feel like a mini-adventure.
Best for Food: Mercato Testaccio
Undoubtedly, food is an integral part of the Roman experience. Among the many markets, Mercato Testaccio stands out with its vibrant atmosphere and exceptional offerings. The market features aisles lined with local cheesemongers, bakers, and butchers, all fostering a sense of community. Its mix of culinary and non-food vendors creates an ideal shopping experience, perfect for those seeking fresh ingredients or delightful local treats.
