Summary
Let’s cut to the chase; there are very few shows in Macau. Unlike Las Vegas, where shows and buffets are part of the attraction, Macau is primarily about the gambling experience. Most visitors in Macau are usually here to gamble extensively.
However, things are improving, with more shows now available than ever before. The flagship House of Dancing Water at the City of Dreams casino and resort has been joined by the Vegas-inspired House of Magic at Studio City. Additionally, Macau has become a regional hotspot for attracting significant musical and sporting events. From renowned musicals straight out of the London West End to exciting UFC events, there are plenty of big-name shows happening each week.
Wild Water at the House of Dancing Water Show
This is the standout show. Blockbuster special effects and a stellar cast make it the only Macau production that could easily compete with those in Vegas. The performance is a combination of the Singing in the Rain musical and a Chinese folktale presented in an action film style. This stunning spectacle unfolds on a stage that features jets of water and mesmerizing waterfalls. It is a completely unique and brilliant theatrical experience. Ticket prices are on the higher side, so if you’re eager to catch the show, it is advisable to plan ahead.
Crazy Paris Show and the Cabaret
Another entertaining option is the Crazy Paris show at the Grand Lisboa. This adult-oriented performance has been entertaining audiences for the last 28 years, showcasing a variety of B-rate singers and dancers performing classic cabaret numbers—think Moulin Rouge and the iconic Can-Can dance. While it may not be innovative, it remains a classic casino show. Best of all, it’s completely free. These performances occur daily behind the bar on the 1st floor of the casino.
Abracadabra at the House of Magic
Franz Harary, an Atlantic City veteran, brings a taste of magical entertainment to Macau. Known for his larger-than-life illusions—having previously made landmarks like the Taj Mahal disappear—Harary has crafted a mix of three shows in Macau. Attendees will feast their eyes on traditional magic and vaudeville, culminating in the grand illusions that made him famous, all taking place across three different theaters. With frequent performances happening daily, there’s no need to plan too far ahead.
All the Headliners at the Venetian
While it may not match the House of Dancing Water in regular lineup offerings, the Venetian still attracts the biggest names in entertainment. Renowned artists like Britney Spears and top K-Pop stars have held residencies here, ensuring vibrant performances. Additionally, acclaimed musicals such as Thriller and Phantom of the Opera (featuring the original cast from London) frequently stop on their Asia tours. Still not convinced? The Venetian hosts headline UFC events and showcases talented tennis players on the ATP tour.
They Have Fountains
While not a show, the stunning performance at the Wynn Macau is definitely worth a visit. Inspired by Las Vegas, their magnificent Pleasure Lake features over 200 fountains that erupt in synchrony, accompanied by jets of fire and captivating lights. This remarkable display of fountains spurting into the air is nothing short of a cinematic moment.
If you’re seeking a diversion from the gambling tables and the shows mentioned above do not fully capture your interest, consider exploring some of Macau’s rich Portuguese heritage.
