El Fenn has transformed the hospitality scene since it opened two decades ago on the edge of the medina, featuring just six jewel-toned bedrooms amidst vibrant bougainvillea. This hotel has redefined the aesthetic of Marrakech with its color-clashing walls, Moorish keyhole archways, thickly woven Berber and velvet fabrics, and serene orange trees. Over time, it has expanded to include 13 interconnected buildings, three pools, and 41 bedrooms adorned in blush pinks, mustards, and acid yellows.
Every room exudes the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, showcasing elements such as zellige tiles, hand-stitched camel leather floors, and pop art installations. Various sun-drenched courtyards lead to a stunning wood-carved annexe that elegantly incorporates traditional Arabic motifs. My recent stay in one of the “cosy” rooms revealed the intricate craftsmanship of local artisans, epitomizing the essence of Moroccan design.
The open-air, guest-only Colonnade Café, decorated with olive trees, serves as a testament to Marrakech’s contemporary spirit, featuring a modern spiral staircase connecting the boutique to the spruced-up rooftop. Amidst the vibrant atmosphere, the historic charm of Marrakech remains palpable.
