Top 17 Why You Should Visit Grand Rapids, Michigan

Discover Grand Rapids, Michigan: A Hidden Gem for Travelers

A few years ago, I convinced a friend that it would be beneficial to travel from Ann Arbor to the west side of Michigan for an expo related to our work. However, one of the highlights of the trip came as we were just beginning to approach Grand Rapids: She exclaimed, “WOW! It’s like a real city!” I gave her a lot of grief at the time for that comment—after all, she’s lived in Michigan since she was 7 years old.

To be fair, Grand Rapids is one of those cities—despite being the second-largest city in Michigan, it remains a sleeper hit. It has always been a great city, but over the past couple of decades, it has consistently transformed, becoming a truly exciting destination to visit. Luckily, now that you’re aware, it’s time to discover all that Grand Rapids has to offer. Here are 17 of my favorite spots to visit:

Eat

Did you know that Michigan ranks second only to California in agricultural diversity? Moreover, West Michigan produces over three-quarters of all crops harvested in the state. Consequently, farm-to-table restaurants are plentiful in Grand Rapids.

  • Grove: Known for responsibly sourcing ingredients from local, sustainable farms, Grove has been recognized as a top restaurant both in Michigan and the Midwest. It’s on the fancier side, so if you’re seeking a more casual experience, head to The Green Well, a gastropub from the same restaurant group.
  • Terra: Focused on local, seasonal ingredients, Terra is a great spot for lunch, dinner, or a weekend brunch—and they have an excellent happy hour. Don’t miss the Gazelle Salad and their famous Beet Margarita.
  • Osteria Rossa: This Italian-inspired restaurant offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere with local beers and handmade cocktails. Their wood-fired pizzas and house-made pastas are must-tries.
  • Marie Catrib’s: Perfect for breakfast or lunch, Marie Catrib’s offers an extensive menu with various options for every palate, plus a packed deli case and delicious baked goods.

Drink

Once known for being the first U.S. city to add fluoride to its drinking water in 1945, Grand Rapids has now made a name for itself in the craft beer scene. With more breweries than you can visit in one trip—so plan accordingly!

  • Founders: This beloved brewing company has garnered numerous awards and is a must-visit.
  • Perrin: Located on the north side of town, Perrin offers a small hike worth making for their Grapefruit IPA.
  • Harmony: Along with their variety of beers, Harmony Brewing Company serves up delicious wood-fired pizzas.
  • Brewery Vivant: Experience a cozy atmosphere resembling a Belgian monastery—make sure to try the duck confit nachos.
  • Madcap Coffee: When you need a coffee break, swing by this downtown gem, which also offers online ordering.

See

  • Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park offers beautiful indoor and outdoor gardens and galleries. It’s worth spending a day here to explore its rich offerings.
  • The Fish Ladder Sculpture: The Fish Ladder Sculpture provides a picturesque view of the Grand River. During the right season, watch migratory fish navigate their way upstream.
  • Meyer May House: Visit the Meyer May House for a free tour of a meticulously restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, focusing on how the structure was adapted for its original occupant.
  • Eastown: A hip, walkable neighborhood filled with galleries, coffee shops, and unique stores. Don’t miss the famous hot dog shop Yesterdog.
  • The Downtown Market: Featuring an outdoor farmers market, it’s an excellent stop to sample local produce and specialty foods.

Grand Rapids offers a delightful blend of culinary experiences, craft brews, and cultural attractions. As you consider your next getaway, make sure this vibrant city is on your travel list!
