A sublime sunset view, a wild off-road adventure: these are the moments that turn our escapes into love affairs for a new locale. While there are myriad cities on your bucket list befitting a fleeting holiday romance, have you considered the destinations we choose to make a long-term commitment to?
We often have a love-hate relationship with the cities we inhabit. They may infuriate us at times and have us dreaming of more exotic affairs, but through the make-ups and break-ups we still get butterflies when we think of home. In celebration of these special relationships, our iBestTravel Locals delve into why they cherish the cities they’ve decided to settle down in.
Rome, Italy: an eternal love
My type used to be quaint and quiet, but spirited Rome swept me off my feet. Italy’s capital wooed me with its sweeping views and gilded sunsets, best enjoyed from the top of Gianicolo Hill. Even the most mundane tasks were thrilling—a work commute transformed into an exhilarating adventure brimming with the sounds of coffee spoons, the Colosseum, and captivating cupolas. Five years in, the initial passion has ebbed: I’ve seen Rome’s flaws, its traffic, graffiti, and noise. However, one twilight stroll along the Tiber reminds me why I stay.
The moment I fell: A way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach; my first dish of rigatoni alla carbonara had me weak at the knees.

Tel Aviv, Israel: my springtime soulmate
Those who know me understand Tel Aviv by its affectionate moniker, ‘Hill of Spring’. Therefore, it seemed only fitting that our fateful meeting occurred in April, just as flowers were blooming and locals began to taste the Mediterranean warmth. Maybe it was the seasonal stirrings of romance in the air, but Tel Aviv felt like a longtime soulmate. Delving deeper revealed a spicy, artistic, and musical soul. Like any long-term relationship, we’ve faced our ups and downs, but it’s safe to say that things have never been boring.
The moment I fell: As the sun set over the sea, transforming the sky into a canvas of purple and pink, I strolled along the seafront promenade; the vivacity of locals jogging, cycling, and playing basketball compelled me to climb a tall eucalyptus tree. Although it may not have been the wisest choice, that moment marked the beginning of my deep affection for Tel Aviv.

Dublin, Ireland: love at second sight
My initial encounter with Dublin began amid a crippling recession, and regrettably, we didn’t click. After some time apart, we reunited in 2015, and everything changed. It felt better this time around; we had both matured and gained confidence. Dublin may not be the most glamorous city, but it boasts an unbeatable sense of humour and a wealth of hidden creative talent. I soon realized that this was no mere fling; it blossomed into a true, mature love affair filled with comfort, excitement, and countless date nights to keep the spark alive.
The moment I fell: Each time I turn a corner and discover a new, vibrant piece of street art, I fall a little more in love.

Delhi, India: my metro mania
Somewhat aloof yet always close to my heart, Delhi had long intrigued me with its elusive charm. As I ventured deeper, I uncovered a personality that was simultaneously exasperating and captivating—impetuous one moment, surprisingly genteel the next. Being smitten, I pursued Delhi wholeheartedly, and before long, I began to appreciate the substance beneath its superficial exterior. Today, Delhi satisfies my constant craving for history, culture, and cuisine like no other city in India.
The moment I fell: Delhi’s resilient architectural heritage tells the tale of a rich and animated past—these weather-beaten poems-in-stone captured my heart from the first sight.

New York City, USA: my mercurial amore
I’d long admired New York City from afar. When we finally met, I sensed it was the beginning of a lifelong romance. The energy was enchanting, filled with the assertive confidence of a city that knows its worth. As I explored its cinematic streets, I fell for New York’s electric, unpredictable nature and the way its moods shifted—from chaotic urban scenes accompanied by a cacophony of taxi horns to serene, brownstone-lined lanes with hidden cafes, a secret whispered only to those in the know.
The moment I fell: The day I finally recognized the secret to New York’s intoxicating charm: whether your passion lies in culture, food, fashion, architecture, or history, NYC can fulfill your deepest desires.

Běijīng, China: love is blind
Whoever claimed love is blind must have been referring to you, Běijīng. Dressed in your modern attire, encircled by skyscrapers and adorned with red flags and socialist flowerbeds, you emanate harmony and civility, yet possess a hint of blandness. However, I perceive the passion behind your eyes that narrate tales of a vibrant life lived—victories and losses, joy and sorrow, secrets unveiled only to those who approach with an open heart. Your winding paths and willow-fringed lakes, along with historical relics, culinary delights, and artistic treasures, thrive within. In essence, I love you for your authenticity.
The moment I fell: Meandering through silent, moonlit hutong alleyways, I found true beauty.

Cape Town, South Africa: more than skin deep
It wasn’t quite love at first sight. While Cape Town is undeniably attractive, it was only after my departure that I discovered I had fallen deeply in love. This led to a rather one-sided long-distance relationship, and upon returning, I questioned how I had ever left. Cape Town only grows more stunning with each passing day—it has its baggage, but who doesn’t? Its complex history contributes to its charm, continually reminding me that one should never judge a destination by its exterior.
The moment I fell: The first glimpse of Table Mountain upon my return to Cape Town evoked an exhilarating feeling in my stomach, affirming that this city was the one for me.
